I'm building a new pc and i just wanted some ideas on a processor and motherboard i am currently looking at the AMD Athlon 4000+ but not sure to pull the trigger, all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I just built an Athlon 64 4000+. Went with :

eVGA 133-K8-NF41 Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard

since there was a deal at newegg for the board and videocard combo. I like it, only complaint is no firewire port, but I can get a card if I need firewire. I didn't really do much research though, I just saw this deal and read some of the reviews there(4 of 5 stars w/ 200 or so review) and went for it.

get an opteron for socket 939 instead, you will get away cheaper and have a more stable processor in the end (AMD have much harder checks on the opterons).

as for a mobo, if you want a mobo where you can set everything you want in bios go for any nforce4 DFI. If overclocking isn't something you wanna do then go for the asus a8n. Stable as hell when running at default settings :)

these opterons are way to expensive, paying over 200Euro for a lousy 1.8 GHz (2.4 Ghz costs 600Euro:eyespop: ) is not cool for a someone with making music is a hobby. The AMD Athlon64 will cost about half the money of an opteron.

And nagging about processor stability is like soooooo 2002. The above mentioned processor really isnt that bad as you put it.

dude you must be checking the dual core opterons out because thoose prices are way out of line.

Here in sweden there's a 1$ difference between the A64 4000+ and the Opteron 150.

seems like newegg has a difference of 1$ between the 4000+ and the opteron 150 too, check for yourself Link

But the processor nagging still stands! :P

well both yes and no.
It's true that most processors are stable enough today so you don't get unwanted hangups due to the processor (it's more often a heatproblem nowdays that causes trouble).
But still, for 1$ more you get a much bigger chance that you get a non-faulty processor straight frmo the box :)
