Monitors/Speaker setup

Hey guys just wondering what speakers setup or monitors people have or would recommend??
My current setup is through a hi-fi but its starting to sound a little tinny since I moved my setup into a much larger room.
I've been considering the Alesis M1 Actives or the passive variety and getting a separate amp, but would I need a sub to get decent bass?? Or maybe going for wharfedales??
My budget is between �300 and �400 and unfortunately there arent many places to go and try out equipment near me so im just trying to expand my knowledge!

I dont know if this will be of much help but i belive that a common misconception (as i see it) is that djs think they need studio moniters for their setups.
When djing you dont need to hear a perfectly flat respone you just want to be able to crank it without it sound like sh*t.
I say just go for PA/Loudspeakers and that way if you decide to do some houseparties your covered.
I baught myself PA speakers and i can use them for houseparties as well as my bedroom meaning its an extra $50 to $100 every party in my wallet.
Although ...you might just be some sick audiophile who has to have the unltimate in overpriced quality. |

i like flat monitors because a flat response allows me to really hear what is happening when I work my EQs. Consumer/pro level loudspeakers all have different qualities they use to sell to the public...eg. warm, crisp, tinny, etc. thats why i use flat monitors.
as for the alesis, i wouldnt get them. i bought them and hated them. i returned them for a set of rockit 8s and they are MUCH better. |

| If you can spend 400 quid, I'd definately go for KRK RP8's. |

A PA would be good but I reckon it might be a bit overkill for my flat, the RP8 rockits are the ones ive been considering, probably get them for less than 400 if I phone around too

I have PA speakers (cheapies) but they sound best when loud which is not so good in a ordinary house or apartment. I'm in a house with all the windows closed & still I get complaints from the people next door, and the volume is far less than what the speakers can take. PA speakers are designed to project the sound a long distance and sound harsh up close, probably because of the compression driver (tweeter).
Higher quality PA speakers such as Mackie would be better, they sound OK at lower volumes & closer distances. I'm thinking monitors plus a monitor sub would be best for DJ practice & small parties, need to check some out. |

If you are a bit of a audiophile & enjoy good sound then go for any kind of Mackie's.
I've got HR624'S & a HRS120 sub. There amazing :cool: |

you do have a point if you are looking for speakers that will do the double duty thing. for mixing at home, and being able to carry a house party.
but that doens't mean that what you are suggesting fit's everyone's bill.
my monitors are dual use, studio work, and dj'ing. so i use krk V8's. i have no use for a ty pa system... since that's what most people will get if they not "some sick audiophile who has to have the ultimate in overpriced quality."
now that think about it, my V8s and the krk sub, ARE enough to up in living rooms across america.
if you're looking for something that's just for you room... go for quality over sound.
really, would rather mix on a rane empath, or the berhinger pioneer mixer knock off? sure the berhinger has an extra channel, and has effects... but you would really pass up a rane for a box like that?
THAT IS THE QUESTION! sound quality, or loudness... |

Its all about prefrence and i was just giving you my opinion.
If you want to use the speakers for some form of production or you just dont wanna crank it up then ofcourse dont go for a PA system but it also comes down to the money you want to spend.
With the audiophile thing it was kind of a joke, no need to take it to seriously. But there are alot of people who just want to spend more money on something just because it is more expensive. |
