I bet it involves a high ISO.
lol
Or waiting for the house strobes to flash.
Thats ftw! |

| Well of course waiting for the stobes to flash, but also finding a good high ISO/low aperture/correct shutter speed. Also Having the flash fire right before the shutter closes, which means the flash won't pick up on the smoke. |

Seemed that way... 3" shutter f/2.8 with normal flash produced tons of smoke, while doing that with 2nd curtain synch produced pic # 27.
Too much stuff in the way on the balcony to get a nice wide angle shot, sadly... |

Its not on the flash, its on the camera.
Go in Menu->Custom Functions->Shutter Curtain Sync and put it on 2nd. |

Found it in the camera, but there's a setting for it on the flash, too...unless it's something different...
When I change the settings just on the camera, flash goes off like it usually does.
Second-Curtain Synchronization
Normally, the flash fires in synchronization with the first shutter curtain when the shutter is fully open. With second-curtain synchronization, the flash fires immediately before the second shutter curtain closes at the end of the exposure. With second curtain synchronization and a slow shutter speed, you can create a trailing blur (illuminated by ambient light) that trails a moving subject (illuminated by the flash) to give a natural-looking illusion of motion.
1. Set the desired picture-taking mode with the camera.
Press the <-> and <+> buttons 2 simultaneously to select [Second-Curtain Sync icon here, looks like three arrows pointing to the right with the third arrow filled in]on the LCD panel. |
