Review: MARKUS SCHULZ | Saturday January 14th 2006 | Atlanta, GA

I think I need to start of by saying this: I've been to a lot of shows in Atlanta over the past 4 years now. A few of them have been simply amazing (Tiesto '03, Ferry '03, G&D June '05). However, I can easily say that Markus Schulz tonight was mindblowing. Pure perfection from beginning to end. No mistakes, never a dull moment. He had the crowd in the palm of his hand from the very first beat.

We got there a little early...so early that they were still having a "staff meeting" and wouldn't let us into the club yet. We went across the street to Fuego and had a couple of drinks then headed back over to the club around 10:30. We were almost the first people in the club....hehe.

I think the opening DJ was Christian Michael (Devin or someone please correct me if I'm wrong). He was....ok. It seemed like he couldn't make up his mind and was just randomly throwing down tracks from every genre. He'd drop a housey track, then mix it into prog. breaks, then back to house, then into prog trance, then back to breaks. Kinda' threw people off. He played a couple of good tunes in the end...remix of U2 - Vertigo, MV vs. Styx - Mr. Roboto, and a killer remix of Survivor - Eye of the Tiger.

Markus came on right at 12. I talked to him for about 10 minutes before he went on and he is easily the nicest DJ I've ever met. We talked about a few tunes and I got him to sign my copy of Miami '05. As I said...he was right on from the moment he got started. You could tell he was having a great time and loving every second of it. He has great crowd working skills and always has a smile on his face. He seemed to share the excitement with someone who went crazy with a tune they recognized (just as I did about 10 or 12 times) :tongue2

Tracklist that I can recall (not in specific order):

Armin Van Buuren ft. Justine Suissa - Wall of Sound
Gabriel & Dresden pres. Motorcycle - My Blue Heart (G&D Chocolate Pop Tart Dub)
Roland Klinkenberg - O-Matic
Max Graham - Automatic Weapon
Yilmaz Altanhan - Eighties (Ozgur Can Main Mix)
Hammer & Bennett - Language (Santiago Nino Tech Dub)
Dogzilla - Without You (Dub Mix)
Dave Gahan - Dirty Stick Floor (Junkie XL Mix) mashup with vocals from Solar Stone - Solarcoaster
Mojado ft. Mr. Sam - Naranja (Dimitri Andreas Vision)
Matthew Dekay vs Proluctors - The Deep Show
Ozgur Can - Connected (Santiago Nino Remix)
Marco V - Automanual
Gabriel & Dresden ft. Molly - Tracking Treasure Down
RR Workshop - Electrolux vs Ridgewalkers ft. El - Find
Markus Schulz ft. Airwave - Ballymena
Yoshimoto - Du What U Du (Trentemoller Mix):eyespop: :eyespop:
Way Out West - Killa (Orkidea Remix)
Matthew Dekay vs. The Proluctors - Bad
Wippenberg - Earth
13 Senses - Into The Fire (Cicada Remix) (AMAZING TUNE!!!) :eyespop:

Encore:
Markus Schulz & Departure - Without You Near (Gabriel & Dresden Remix)

Great mix of bangin' new tunes and some great classics as well. He played a lot of other harder, more techy-trance tunes that were bad ass. I'll update if I find ID's.

It really sucks that the only TA's there (that I know, at least) were Matt & Samira. I wish everyone could have witnessed this set. I know everyone seems to pretty much hate Trance right now...but man...you all missed out :D

Devin - PLEASE try and get him back again sometime within the year!

Markus easily gets my vote for #1 this year.

Take care everyone!

:wtf:

It's January :wtf:

Glad to see you had a good time. I would've loved to have gone. The TL doesn't look outstanding really, it looks decent though. I'm sure there were many other tracks that were freakin' awesome that aren't listed.

I agree with everything you said. It was definetly a great night of music. Now I have to go lay down.

I walked into this show expecting a night of lame music box melodies and songs spun of cheese, but I have to say, I was absolutely impressed with Markus. He really blew me away with his set... Great night of great music :)

Trey-nice job on the tracklist.. I'm impressed...lol ;) BTW-I absolutely adore your girlfriend. She's so sweet and just has a great positive energy about her... Hang on to this one :)

I thought the whole night was on point. We had Icey over at compound but I felt like I really needed to be over there to check out Markus, so I took the night off and I am very glad I did.

There is new form of trance out there that seems to be getting pioneered by Markus. His coldharbor selections, production style and DJ style to me represents something new.

Its inspiring to say the least. Over the past couple weeks, I have been working on a track thats been inspired by all this. I have it done now and if any of you care to check it out I will post a link on the TA music forum probably tomorrow.

But ya, this is a review thread for Markus. Overall, a great night! He is a great DJ and it was a pleasure talking to him. For those of you who havent seen him, dont miss him the next time you have an opportunity to.

You know it just hit me that my two favorite DJ's are from the US now. I think we are very fortunate to have such talent in the states. Hopefully in the coming years this will transcend into a bigger emphasis being placed on the talent here in the US.

I completely agree with you. It's nice to see the likes of Schulz & G&D mixing it up with the Euros :)
