We had a massive debate on this a while back.GOD

Why are so many classic trance tunes based on intricate layered patterns as advanced as symphonies?

No trance tunes are as intricate or advanced as symphonies, classic or otherwise.

except for trance tunes sampling guys that play 6/8 4-mallet chromatic runs up and down a 5-octave marimba.

Well, I don't know about you guys, but learning how to do a 6/8 4-mallet chromatic run up and down a 5-octave marimba is definitely on my to-do list for 2006.

How hairy is the average jazz fan?

Excuse you? Is it THAT hard to believe an intelligent, talented woman exists? God knows there are millions that are neither but...I am not a liar.

What? Your subtle "im a gurl :))x" attempt at sympathy will not work.

This thread is not an excuse to shout about how brilliant you are - I can absolutely guarantee you that no-one cares. What exactly is the relevance of that to the topic title? Did you think that by one trance fan throwing in bloated statistics, it would allow us to reach a conclusion?

I doubt you did think that, you probably just wanted to publicly advertise yourself.

Intelligence is only a strength when tamed.

Haha, there's probably a correlation for that one.
VERY.

Well, I didn't.

Anyways, yes you can find similarities between the two genres (like both being based around melodies etc) as you can find similarities between classical music and metal (Yngwie Malmsteen for example). But to call it the classical music of today would irritate a lot of people I think ;) You may disagree, but I say this according to my own experience, since I both compose electronic music and play classical music. And believe me, classical music is a lot more complex (not saying it's "better" or "worse").

I think there are a fair amount of college students into this music, on weekday nights it comes on the radio over here at my school. When I was living in the dorms there were maybe 5 people (including me) in the whole building that were listening to any electronic dancing music, maybe 2 or 3 of those people played trance on occasion.

You go out to a place that is 18+ or 21+ and you are pretty much guaranteed to find a few college students though, mainly because that is the age range most of your college kids are in, rather than because of anything to do with trance.

Alot of us listened to it before we were old enough to go out anywhere too. I think the amount of education varies quite widely in our little group. Most of the kids I meet are studying some sort of electronic or computer related stuff, a good amount also doing some sort of music related learning.

I do have this picture in my head of what I think the average trance fan is, and to be honest it isn't very pretty. My guess is the average trance fan is some sort of pill munching hedonist type, who doesn't really enjoy trance music when he's sober but goes out to look cool and meet people, has a high school education, works in retail or restaurants or car mechanics or something like that. All this based on my own observations while going out.

How educated? Within EDM, I'd say about average. Brighter than the average Hard House or Florida Breaks fan, about the same as those into House and Jungle, but less intelligent than the typical Techno or Ambient listener. In general, mind you.

Psyheads are on a different page altogether, and Hardcore followers are either brilliant or insane.
