But what do you think about Ray Nagin saying stuff? Is he equally loony? All of this invoking God commentary...thoughts?

NEW ORLEANS
Mayor Ray Nagin suggested Monday that Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and other storms were a sign that "God is mad at America" and at black communities, too, for tearing themselves apart with violence and political infighting.
"Surely God is mad at America. He sent us hurricane after hurricane after hurricane, and it's destroyed and put stress on this country," Nagin, who is black, said as he and other city leaders marked Martin Luther King Day.
"Surely he doesn't approve of us being in Iraq under false pretenses. But surely he is upset at black America also. We're not taking care of ourselves."
Nagin also promised that New Orleans will be a "chocolate" city again. Many of the city's black neighborhoods were heavily damaged by Katrina.
"It's time for us to come together. It's time for us to rebuild New Orleans _ the one that should be a chocolate New Orleans," the mayor said. "This city will be a majority African American city. It's the way God wants it to be. You can't have New Orleans no other way. It wouldn't be New Orleans."
Nagin described an imaginary conversation with King, the late civil rights leader.
"I said, `What is it going to take for us to move on and live your dream and make it a reality?' He said, `I don't think that we need to pay attention any more as much about other folks and racists on the other side.' He said, `The thing we need to focus on as a community _ black folks I'm talking about _ is ourselves.'"
Nagin said he also asked: "Why is black-on-black crime such an issue? Why do our young men hate each other so much that they look their brother in the face and they will take a gun and kill him in cold blood?"
The reply, Nagin said, was: "We as a people need to fix ourselves first."
Nagin also said King would have been dismayed with black leaders who are "most of the time tearing each other down publicly for the delight of many."
A day earlier, gunfire erupted at a parade to commemorate King's birthday. Three people were wounded in the daylight shooting amid a throng of mostly black spectators, but police said there were no immediate suspects or witnesses. |
I don't have a dog in this fight, I'm just curious what people think. |

A 'choclate' New Orleans?
Doesn't this smack of racism??:wtf:
The death consensus after Katrina clearly showed that the concerns of Nagin and ilk of neglected black people were unwarranted... |

I saw a brief thing about this on CNN this morning when I was getting ready for work. I think it's pretty riduculous that on MLK day, he's talking about how God wants New Orleans to be a predominantly African-American city.
Didn't King say "I have a dream that one day the state of Alabama, whose governor's lips are presently dripping with the words of interposition and nullification, will be transformed into a situation where little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls and walk together as sisters and brothers," not one day, cities will be full of only black people because God wants us to self-segregate?
Also, lol at "chocolate city." It makes me think of the chocolate palace in the new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie. :D |

From what I read up here in Canada, MLK day was a total left-wing agenda day!
For shame...:( |

I think most people pretty much expect Robertson to say outlandish , just because the guy is borderline certifiable and delusional.
Nagin's another matter. There were some good comments in there, like African American's needing to take better care of themselves.
I get the gyst of what he was trying to say, but Jesus he coulda said it better. I think the whole MLK festivities just got the better of him or something. Just goes to show you that politicians, the supposedly most polished of public speakers, still need to think before they say things. He really did come across as looking a bit foolish. |

How not to back pedal. Can someone verify this quote? IS this really what he said afterwards? I mean come. on.
| quote: | | "How do you make chocolate? You take dark chocolate, you mix it with white milk, and it becomes a delicious drink. That is the chocolate I am talking about," he said. |
So do we mix a little Blanco with a little Nagin (whoah, I just realize how much their names sound like variations of white and black!) and come up with a "delicious drink" called New Orleans? Just leave your foot in your mouth so nothing else silly comes out! |

| Poor Nagin, he fails to apply the rule of seperation of church and state. There's really not much to say about this except that I agree with when you say Nagin and Robertson are just as loony. |

Apparently, he's now apologized for the comment - http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/01/17/nagin.city/index.html |
