Does anyone else have TMJ?

So... many years ago I went to the hospital because I honestly thought I somehow broke my jaw...to make a long story short, I was diagnosed with TMJ (temporomandibular joint) syndrome.
Basically, my jaw is out of it's socket, and whenever I move my jaw (to smile, talk, eat, etc.) it makes a cracking sound and it reeeeeeaally hurts. And I am constantly smiling and there's no way I can force myself not to...so that makes things worse I think.
I have seen a few specialists, and they wanted me to pay them like $10000.00 to open my jaw and shove wires into me. I passed on that. I had a series of TMJ massages (which weren't fun at all) and they never helped. I was also on medication for the pain which didn't seem to help either. :(
I was just wondering if anyone else has this or knows anything about it? If so...are there any other ways that I haven't thought of to ease the pain? |

Do you have a mouth piece for sleeping?
I got fitted for one about a year ago (via my dentist) and it has (via nigtly use) solved most of the symptoms. |

No I don't have one. I don't know if it would help me much because I sleep on my side or stomach usually and no matter how hard I try, I can't sleep on my back (which I think is the only position you can sleep in if you have one of these?) |

Happens to me, and not sure why some times it happens and others it doesn't..
Hasn't become enough of an annoyance just yet. |

What can I do to treat TMD?
The majority of cases can be treated by unloading (resting) the joint, taking a non-aspirin pain reliever and practicing stress management and relaxation techniques. It's important to break bad habits to ease the symptoms. Most treatment for TMD is simple, often can be done at home, and does not need surgery. For example, control clenching or grinding during the day by sticking your tongue between your teeth. If you still experience pain, you may be grinding or clenching your teeth at night. So see your dentist for a nighttime mouthguard.
Most people will experience relief with minor treatment. More severe cases may be treated with physical therapy, ice and hot packs, posture training and orthopedic appliance therapy (splint). Eating soft foods and avoiding chewing gum also help relax the muscles

| I'm not sure if its TMJ. But i've dislocated my jaw before while yawning. on 2 seperate occasions. So my jaw was stuck wide open while i was sitting in emergency as people walked by and probably wondered how i got myself into this situation. Long story short, the doc told me that my jaw socket isn't as deep as many peoples, so when i yawn, i gotta be careful. it does click, and on occasion cause pain. Nothing unbearable but it is irritating to worry about yawning for the rest of my life. It could also be from the constant beating when i spar/fight with people. Which would perpetuate the problem. But in anycase, they told me that im outta luck unless I want my face cut open and having my bone ground down so it won't dislocate anymore. I decided that my dashing good looks was much to important to me and respectfully gave that idea the middle finger. |

I'd be careful with that...It kinda reminds me of what I have. I also have to be careful when I yawn, and it drives me crazy!! :whip: |

It doesn't matter how you sleep - you can get a mouth guard.
I sleep back, side, inside out and upside down - it works fine all ways. |
