People upset because ATHLETES wont carry the Canadian Flag

people are so stupid. Many of the upcoming athletes for the Winter Olympics have declined and/or asked to have their names removed from the list of potential athletes to carry the flag. People (incl Don Cherry) are in an uproar and think they should be ashamed of themselves.
Are these people serious or what? The opening ceremonies are 2 or so hours long. But there are hours of prep that goes into it, especially for the flag carrier. Many athletes skip the opening ceremonies because they have their event(s) very close afterwards. It is very physically and emotionally tiring taking part in something like that, and the flag carrier has the worst of it out of them all.
If you trained 11 or so months out of the year for many many years of your life in order to make it to the Olympics, you are going to want to do your best and that best may include bringing home a medal or two. What these assclowns who get upset about not carrying flag dont understand is that despite what you may think (or saw in Cool Runnings) the Olympics ARE NOT ABOUT carrying the flag. only one person does it anyways. Its about the world coming together to celebrate and hold a competition for the worlds greatest athletes. Its about going to do your best and possibly winning a medal. You arent going to drain yourself and kill your body to hold a flag if you are competing in the coming days after the opening ceremonies. You would just be throwing it all away and jeopardizing your chance to do your best.
These people who are upset about it are typically NON athletes and have NO ING IDEA the amount of time, effort and dedication it takes to even get to such a level of athletism. So why would you it all up when you get to your top competition in your career.
ing pisses me off. How can people be so ing stupid. No wonder we dont have many top athletes in this country. Too many ing morons who dont have the mindset it takes to be a winner. That and we dont give nearly enough money to other sports.
Its not like these athletes dont want to carry the flag. THEY ALL DO, but if its gonna jeopardize their chance of doing well in their event(s) then it makes perfect sense to pass. Thats they trained for. To do the best they can do.
/Rant
CN: People who are upset that athletes dont want to carry the flag are nonathletic morons who have no clue what it takes to do your best in a world class sport. |

Don't be a , and carry the flag.
CARRY IT. It's a symbol of national pride, I'd want to be the one carrying it.
I played city football for 10 years, and I know what its like to do dumbass strenuous right before a game, or even carry somebody on your back for a kilometre straight, with a damaged MCL and previously compressed discs in my spine, in ridiculously cold temperatures because that person was cold. It's not that bad, so don't bitch. Suck it up. |

I don't get it.
They can't spend a day doing opening ceremony?
Poor babies need their beauty sleep?
Bring out the WAAAAAAH brigade. |

| If athletes are anything, they are superstitious. Isn't there a jinx associated with being the opening flag carrier? |

no offence but playing city football isnt even close to what it takes to be an olympic athlete.
The flag carrier typically has about an 8 hour day of non stop stuff. Despite what you may think, they didnt train all those years to carry the flag. They trained to do their best. Sure theyd love to but its gonna effect their performance then it in the best interest to not do it.
If you want to win/do your best, and you are competeting very close to the opening ceremonies you wouldnt carry the flag.
I dont think there is a jinx associated with it, but it will definately drain your body. GOing into the Olympics , a big competiton you have spent years training very hard etc. You are basically tapered for the competition. When tapered you have to stay well rested at all times. You wouldnt go and drain yourself and jeopardize doing your best. Plain and simple. If you cant understand this you have no clue what it takes to do well at that level, period!
Its like you have the biggest competition of your life the next day(or a couple days later) so you decide well im gonna go and do a 8 hour Tiesto Marathon ...yeah thats really gonna help you do well. All those years of sacrafice , training etc all down the drain.
These athletes are highly tuned machines(may sound lame but its true). and you have to take care of yourself coming into competition.
You wouldnt take an F1 car out for a 1000km spin before you have to put it through its paces, would you? Of course not! Same idea. |

if they don't want to carry it, fine. they, as olympic athletes, have an obligation to the country to give it there all, in their field, not carry some flag
Does it have to be athletes that carry it? i say we get national heroes..everyday people who did something remarkable (firemen, people who saved others lives etc) to carry it |

Great rant. I listened to Don Cherry go on and friggin on yesterday about how unpatriotic these athletes are for not want to carry the flag. And I just wanted to strangle him. Going on about how an "American Athlete" would never do this and how it is a perfect example of what is wrong with the country.
OFF DON CHERRY. You are the same type of person to whine and complain that our Olympians need to win medals and how disgraceful it is for Canada to do bad in the Olympics. So when an Athlete says "I want to do all I can for myself to WIN GOLD for my country" and if that means they skip the opening ceremonies cause it either conflicts with their training (ie Pierre Luders) or the competition begins very close to the opening then let them FOCUS.
RELAX! I gaurantee anyone of these athletes who chose to not be flag bearer would love to during the closing ceremony. |

Clearly they should train even harder to compensate for flag carrying.
*ducks*
Also training all your life is all well and good but in SOFAL we had to get back into shape for the season, and fast. Holy those were the worst weeks of my life. TRAINING CAMP OH GOD KILL ME NOW. I'm almost* glad I wrecked my knee and couldn't play OVFL (all-Ontario varsity) the following season.
Enough derailment though. I say we get Jon to carry the flag. In his Civic. And make the Olympic torch the exhaust on his car.
*not even remotely |
