Okay here is the deal. I am sick of getting the blue screen of death on my computer. So, I have decided to replace my mobo, cpu and video card. I will be using them to make a computer for my sister.
My computer is on a dual boot system. I am not a gammer, so the second boot is just for using the internet, watching movies, etc.. . Hence, the hardware should be excellent for a Daw over anything else.
Currently I am running an intel 3.0 ghz on a Asus p4p800-E mobo with 1 gig of samsung ram. These are the things I will be replacing. Oh, I can't remember what the video card is, but it is ati based. So four items will be changed.
Anyway, I would love opinions from people who had specific hardware work together in harmony.
I just don't see the performance I should get from this computer. Especially that blue screen of death which always occurs. And yes, I checked the ram with memtest and it had zero errors.
Oh yes, one more thing. I would like to remain with intel because I feel more comfortable with it.
I remember hearing people talk about dual core, and other things. But I am not sure. I need to do some more reading, but some guidance would be great. Also, if I go 64 bit can I use 32 bit OS until the 64 is ready for music production?
cheers ... . |

| Blue screen of death? I really don't remember that since my Windows 95/98 days :). What OS are you running? Also, make sure you have all updated drivers for your devices. |

A 3GHz CPU with 1GB RAM does sound pretty decent to me... I don't know about the motherboard, but I'm guessing it can't hurt either.
To build up a stable OS for your music production, I'd strongly suggest getting a different OS than WinXP though... |

I don't see anything wrong with WinXP... as long as you keep your system clean of any adware/spyware crap, then it's stable enough. |

go to http://duc.digidesign.com and look under the Pro Tools LE thread "Best compuers for pro tools LE" lots of very useful general PC hardware discussion in there.
As for you blue screen, it's probabbly trying to tell you something.. ;-)
Look closely, I bet it will be saying something along the lines of xx driver has failed. That will start you in the hunt for stability.
Odds are you have either a corrupt driver, or in worse case a piece of failing hardware. No need to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Troubleshoot first. If you can't troubleshoot find a friend who can.. |
