Hey. I'm not trying to stir up trouble for apple or anything but this appears to be a very serious issue for those of you currently looking into buying a new PowerBook and it seems to be unfortunate for those of you who have just purchased them. The defect happens while playing audio where either the buffer or the sound hardware (built-in) on the G4 causes the output to stutter and multiply in volume. The link bewlow gives you a video to get an idea of the effect of it. From what I have found around the net, it seems to be a fairly wide spread problem but most likely only for the latest generation of the PowerBook so hopefully, those of you who bought one a year or two ago are on the safe side. On a lighter side of the problem, I've seen several people, including the link below, say that using an external sound card seems to defeat the problem. Just know that if you plan to invest in a PowerBook right now that youll need to be shelling out for an external sound interface at the same time (which I know a lot of you do anyway).

On Digg, a person responded with the following statements that will better balance the issue.
quote: | This isan issue Apple has officially acknowledged. See it here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302978
However, some the claims that these people are making are insane, and untrue. While the issue does suck, you have to be honest about it.
The website in question states that Apples solution is:
"you should do not multitasking"
That is not true. Apple says, "run only one audio application at a time." One audio program and one program are very different things.
The computer is not "completely useless" either, the audio is buggered yes, but thats far from "completely useless".
Also this issue seems to effect a small number of systems. The number of complains I have heard about this total one (1), and I deal with dozens of owners of these computers a day.
Also a single user of a 12" powerbook does not substantiate the claim that all 12" Powerbooks have the same issue. Nor do I belive that it can be proven (and from my experiance I do not see that most people have this issue with the 15 and 17 inche DL SD Powerbooks) that this issue effects "Every single PowerBook G4 Double-Layer SD (15" and 17") ever made" as I have talked with many users of these computers, and they do not have this issue.
I have no problems supporting legitimate consume issues, but I wont due so if they spout of factually incorrect information in an effort to further their claims. |
Take his statement as you want. There is definitely more than one person claiming of this issue though.
Cheers,
Zac |

I am currently using a 17" G4 laptop.... I bought it in October of 2005 and I have already played live with it.
I am using Ableton wired to Reason and I have had no problems with any audio stutter to date.
I personally love the machine... its my first Mac and the performance has been amazing...
my only complaint... having just bought it I am well pissed to see the new one out and way faster than my model |

edit to my above post
I now have this fault and I am in dispute with Apple over it
Its happening all the time, during a movie, using Itunes etc
I have called Apple and they actually want to bill me £35 to look at the laptop to see if it has a fault. They will return this cash to me if they find something wrong despite the laptop being 3 months old
What a joke
