Manual FTW!
Over here you have to pass your test knowing how to drive a manual.
It's not a distraction at all.
Don't look at the gear knob or pay any extra attention to it, its just natural to use it now.

Actually, it's been proven that there are as many accidents due to changing the radio station or doing anything else in the car, for that matter, as folks that used cell phones.

Using a cellphone is much more dangerous than changing radio stations or talking to someone else in the car. Two reasons:

1. Talking on a mobile phone interferes with the very cognitive resources required to drive safely. You know how when you phone someone on their mobile, the first hting they say is 'Im on the train' (or wherever)? That's because the first thing we do when we phone a person is try to visualise them. As driving also requires visual resources, there is high cognitive load on the part of the visual part of the brain, meaning slower processing and reactions.

2. People talking on the phone can't see what you see and demand constant attention. If you're talking to another passenger, they will see the same as you see and adjust what they're saying (e.g. if you're coming up for a difficult junction, they'll stop/slow down on talking). Likewise, you wouldn't flick the radio stations if you were in the middle of a difficult maneuvore.

can we get some mothafreakin sources on this research.

Ive heard both stories and im always too lazy to search for the actual study. Most of the 'studies' people hear are from secondary news sources....which suck ass.
