Too much bass = Big distraction?

So i'm playing at this party this past saturday, and the sound system I hooked my gear into was pretty nice, and the sub was really loud. I usually mix with the one ear, but my first transition came out so freakin bad! I couldn't get it beatmatched or anything! The bass was way too distracting. I ended up mixing with split cue all night (which i HATE). Anyway any tips you guys have for mixing with one ear when there is alot of bass?

crank the treble and mids in your cue track, makes it easier to hear.

just make sure you turn em down before mixing in!

Yeah, whenever I'm parked on a subwoofer, I have to mix inside headphones all night. :o

One thing I learned with mixing is never completely rely on the bass beat to beatmatch. :)

Could you not hear the mids and highs? I don't quite understand what the problem would be. Was it delay?

It can be, but the problem I usually have is a resonant "pocket" of bass absolutely overwhelming everything else, including the monitor. It happens a lot when the subwoofers are placed under or directly in front of the DJ booth.

Crazy. That sounds like a poor speaker installation.

Bet your levels were way out too...

Its the way with loud systems and poor monitors. Split cue is the best way really. i wouldnt recomment turning the mids and highs upp, cause thats a fast track way to tinitus. Not that DJing in general isnt anyway.

I would be more worried about the turntables picking up the bass.
Good reason why you need to be able to cue in all the different ways and be able to do it comfortably.

I hate loud bass systems. Not just for mixing but for listening too. anyways.. My monitors at home are pretty bass-heavy, so I have to mix with both phones on and cranking up the monitor volume. :/

if it was a house party, when you re setting up next time keep away from the corners of the room.. they are a real trouble spot with bass.

the bass was probably coming from a cheap underpowered bassbin. so it was boomy and uncontrolled, bouncing around the room before it got to your ears.

it sounds like there was a delay in the audio equipment aswell.. as in the music coming out of the headphones was ahead of the speakers.. always check both tracks are sync'd through the headphones while using both ears in headphones.. that usually helps with delay problems..
