| IMO this is a perfectly legitimate discussion. The only way this could end in a flame war is if someone sympathises with or tries to justify the racism in the video game, in which case it's worth the flame war, just so everyone else on the forum knows they're dealing with a racist wit. If there is a Nazi/skinhead sympathiser here, i'd rather find out now and put them on my ignore list now than spend any more time communicating with them without knowing their inclinations. I really don't see why people have a problem with this thread. |

^^im kinda stuck in the middle, ill explain why.
see, i only have a problem with the racism in the game becoz i know where the game comes from (ie white power fvckheads who need a good dose of death).
however, if this were a legitimate game from a respectable publisher, then i wouldnt really have a problem with it at all, as long as it was a good game. i mean, how many games out there are a bit off in terms of the goals or what you can do in the game? i would prefer to play a -hot game as a nazi war hero than a boring piece of where i save the world from a white supremacist nutcase. |

I agree thata good game is a good game anda bad game is a bad game, regardless of the theme. But i would be opposed to a game based on racial violence just as i would be opposed to a game that's based on, say serial rape. Such a game either sends the message that it's acceptable to enjoy such behaviour or if not, then it trivialises something that i think it is absolutely wrong to make light of - regardless o how good the gameplay is. |

| ^^ all very true, however since you can make movies & write books about the subject matter i dont see why the gaming industry should be precluded from similar projects. |

You can make movies and books about the subject matter and you can make games about it. Movies depicting sexual violence can and have ben refused classification in the past, but that's another story.
Firstly there's the difference that a book can discuss racism, without itself being racist, as can a movie. A game that requires you to take the role of a racist and slaughter black people is a different story. It would be drawing a long bow indeed to suggest that such a game objectively explores the phenomenon of racism. It in fact encourages a fantasy roleplay in which someone can find an outlet for their racism.
Secondly I'm not necessarily saying that people shouldn't have the right to make these games, just that if they do, I have the right to pass judgement on them and to express my opinion of them for choosing to make the games.
I wouldn't deny Pauline Hanson the right to climb a bell tower and shout "I hate g00ks" at the top of her lungs, I would simply exercise my right to tell everyone that she's a racist cvnt. |
