| Everyone seems to have there own idea of what Trance is. Tell me in detail how you know the difference between Trance and other types of electronic music. The beats, the melodies, vocals? What makes it "trance"? |

You will UNDERSTAND the difference once you listen to them and get to know them.... definitions and words won't do much!:) |

Trance is for me a rather fast music with nice catching synths, a pushing beat and eventually nice soft vocals. Something that lifts me up. But not always. I'd say trance is a music that makes me thinking. Thinking about nature, freedom, love, peace, happiness...
Some tracks for example, that are trance for me (except those in my sig):
Talla 2XLC - Alaska (Cyrus & The Joker mix)
Svenson & Gielen - Twisted (Svenson & Gielen Energy Mix)
Push - Universal Nation
York - Reachers Of Civilisation (Rank 1 Remix)
Beam & Yanou - The Free Fall

it's a state of mind
it's emotion, it's energy, it's happiness, it's sadness, it's a way to drive your parents and neighbours crazy, it makes you forget about all the bad things in life, it makes you smile, it's FANTASTIC |

now a little bit more technical.
Repeating the same melody over and over again untill you get into trance.
That's one of the basic rules of trance |

Now that is what I was lookin for, thanks Cresto. I am wanting to know what you all think is the difference between trance and techno for example. Alot of types of "electronic music" sounds alike, some are distinct. In my opinion Trance is a constant beat, more keyboards and synth, some with soft vocals.
Now can anyone name 10 djs/producers you think are the ultimate in "trance" music. |

Let me just add, on top of that, it's a music that wakes your emotions up, puts you in the moods listed above, or basically puts you in trance... |

To answer your question 4trancendetroit, there are a few technical things that I've noticed that makes trance what it is.
Harmony - Trance is a genre that usually has some sort of chord progression that is repeated over and over (This and rhythm and timbre usually make or break a song for me).
Melody - Whether it is in the synths or in female vocals, trance usually has some sort of melodic pattern that is repeated.
Rhythm - Trance is always in 4 and the musical phrases are usually 8 bars long (you can always tell an experienced dj from an inexperienced one because of how they mix with the phrases). The tempo is usually from anywhere between 129-145 bpm
Timbre/Sound - Trance has that synth sound that is unique. There is also lots of playing with timbre in trance (it's when you notice the sound changing from something that is really trebly and clear, to one that fades into some more dark and muddled)
But the last thing that many TA's have already said is the emotion in the music that makes trance such a great genre....the ability to deconstruct and reconstuct to recreate through music the feeling of journey is something that few genre's of music can claim to have. I'll stop blabbing now. Hope this helps you out in understanding of trance. |
