cubase for performing live??

I've got a live performance on saturday I'm trying to prepare for and I got a couple of questions..
I'm using an M-Audio Keystation 88 controller that I'm honestly not totally up to speed on. I know it's got the ability to split the keyboard into multiple zones but what I'm wondering is if it's possible to assign each zone to a different software synth in Cubase or any other software, i.e. Ableton.
I was considering Ableton Live as the main software but I realized that it's not exactly as simple as dragging and dropping the main elements in. You gotta get in there and set all the beat markers. I'm making .WAV files of my backing tracks and I don't have time to sit there and tweak each of them.
Any suggestions? |

| This sounds interesting... I also would like to know |

| Don't think that's quite possible. Maybe set several channels to recording and assign the min and max note in the synth but few synths are capable to do so. I think how I would solve it is to take multisamples from the synths and assign everything in a sampler. |

if the wav files are done by you, you usually know the BPM of them correctly...so just put the correct BPM and set the first beatmarker to the first downbeat...
and voilá :P you're ready
about your other question of splitting...I would use Reason rewired to ableton, since Reason can in combinators split the keyboard to use with multiple instruments...(not sure if it's what you're looking for, but it could work) |

so after much experimentation here's what I ended up doing...
I rendered all my backing tracks as .WAV files and loaded up Cubase SX on my laptop. I had a firewire drive running the Cubase files while I controlled the laptop with my MIDI controller.
I sampled the parts I needed to play into Native Instruments Kontakt and made new Multi/Instruments in Kontakt for each song. Each track on Cubase had a dedicated Kontakt instrument loaded up. So, as i was playing my gig, when I needed to switch from one song to the next, I simply hit the down arrow on my laptop and that switched everything over to a new sampler instrument (split up with all my samples).
There were occassions when the sampler wouldn't work for the part I was playing so I also had a couple of software synths loaded up live that i would switch to. For example, I used Korg Legacy Collection for one sound that I was tweaking the hell out of and i simply switched back to the sampler with the arrow keys on my laptop when i was done.
So, it IS possible to use Cubase SX in the mickey mouse way i had it rigged up.. Ableton may have been simpler, but I just wasn't comfortable enough to deal with it on stage. I need more time getting acquainted with it.
As far as using Reason ReWired, it wasn't necessary to use the NN-XT stuff because I had Kontakt. I will tell u that loading Cubase SX, kontakt and a couple of software synths is pretty CPU intensive. It took forever loading it up.
thx for the help guys. |

one final note... to answer my own question... YES, it is possible to use the Keystation 88 Pro to control several different software synths split across the entire keyboard.
The keystation 88 has 4 zones. Each zone can be set to a specific MIDI channel and whatever octave range u want. In cubase, so long as each instrument is setup on a specific MIDI channel and MIDI omni is turned off, all you need to do is select all 4 tracks simultaneously and the keystation will, in theory, control all 4. |

| sounds like it worked alright, but it would be easier if you spent an afternoon fiddling with ableton because that is precisely the reason the program exists :D |
