Laptop+usb audio+asio Help!

I just baught a new laptop.
Acer Travelmate 4064 nothing special but it was mainly for school.
2ghz Pentium M 760
1gb Ram

The problem is that when i hook up my numerk dxm01 mixer (usb soundcard built in) it wont work properly. I always get clicks&pops and or wierd stuttering. When i had my desktop PC asio4all worked fine with my dxm, the pc was a p4 1.4 with 256 ram.

What i am looking for are asio drivers that will work in Ableton Live using more then one output.
Iv tried asio4all and usb audio with no success. Usb audio wasnt free and i dont think i could use both outputs at the same time.

So does anyone know where i could find some universal asio drivers that support more then one output?

Drivers are a damn pain, iv been searching heaps of different forums but i cant find what im looking for.

Hopefully some TA will come in and save the day.

Apart from drivers, which is a possible cause of your problem. Considder that your mixer probably requires a lot of USB voltage. Try it with and with a designated power supply to the mixer and without to see if their is any difference. Desktop PC's often have more USB power than notebooks.

Check if you aren't running a USB2 device on a USB1 port. This could cause data bottlenecks that could easily result in pops and clicks.

Check the installation CD of your mixer if it is supplied with ASIO drivers specific to the device. This is often the case. These are often the best as they utilize all the elements of the device. Be sure to update the drivers from the vendor website.

otherwise, good choice to get a soundcard/mixer hybrid. That's probably the way of the future.

kind regards,

Charlie D

P.S. If any of this helps, please tell me what did I am curious. I'm trying to get experience in the field so it would be appreciated.

Thanks for the reply but i dont think any of it will help.
The mixer is powered via its own power supply.
It did not come with an installation cd it just said in the manual that in windows and mac os it can be setup auto.
Im using dssdj and that is using the windows drivers and both outputs work fine together. Iv messed with the buffer settings and latency in ableton but it doesnt seem to be those either. It is definitly the driver.

Later im going to buy a better mixer and there is nothing in my range that has usb or firewire so ill end up buying an external soundcard anyway.

Thanks for your help.

If you don't have asio4All drivers on the notebook, you might want to try using that driver

I had the same problem..

the culprit? USB. USB is absolute crap for audio streaming. It gets even worse when you deal with laptops because the USB chips inside laptops are designed to share the USB bandwidth across ALL USB devices. So if you got a USB mouse hooked up to it, it's sucking away precious bandwidth.

The solution?
1. Get a firewire harddrive & firewire cardbus interface. If you're using your laptop harddrive to stream music, you're gonna have problems no matter what. The laptop harddrive is notoriously slow.

2. Optmize your laptop. Turn off all virusscanners and anything else that is running in the background as a process.

3. Try getting a USB Cardbus/PCMCIA card to see if it is any faster than the built-in USB ports.

It must be the latency

Having two outputs work fine with my dssdj software. Its just that the asio4all doesnt want to work.
No need to wory. Im gonna stick with mixing in dssdj untill i get my ext soundcard.

EDIT: I tried it again just now... it works. I havnt tried anything different.:( Confused.

This counts for all usb interfaces as far as i know.

I dont know if anyone realy payed attention to what has been said.
It worked fine with windows xp drivers in dssdj. It was the asio conflicting with the drivers. Its wierd because all the drivers where installed and it wasnt working. I got ride of the windows and realtec drivers (came with the laptops built it audio) still did work...
Reinstalled the realtec drivers (Same version as before) and it works.
It was some sort of conflict within the drivers.
The laptop doesnt have firewire. But if i need ill just buy a pcmi card or whatever they are called.
