It's maybe dificult to remove spyware if they install a rootkit, First of all you need to find out what spyware those programs detect, Then do a search for a removal tool for it, Or instructions on how to manually remove them, Most of them require that you boot into safe mode as well as disable the System Restore.

Ian, I know you're in love with me, but I told you. I'm sorry, I'm just not ready.

Ok, but while I wait for you to be ready, will you replicate the "stabbing oneself in face with sword" smiley or the "De-intestine-ing" one ? please.

True, Having System Restore enabled on XP is a huge No No, Cause viruses or spyware stores backups of them on it and even if you remove them, they will come back, But even disabling the System Restore won't stop them, Most Spyware and Viruses uses a rootkit that is completely undectable on many of the major AntiVirus or Antispyware Programs cause they become invisable once the system boots up. However, There is a program called Rootkit Revealer, That will scan your system for any Rootkits thats maybe hidden on your system, Then you will have to somehow remove them, You can get the program right here.

No, you don't need to reinstall or ANYTHING like that. My brother's computer had this EXACT SAME thing, and I simply ran Hitman Pro and it cleared everything up!

http://www.hitmanpro.nl/ (There is an english language option, don't worry).
