Something on a serious note. Please try to keep it serious
I started thinking because i was very bored and came to a conclusion that many of us TAs love to travel.
When i say traveling i don't mean to say going to DR and going to a resort, staying in the swimming pool, eating five star meals etc the entire vacation, because you can do that here in the states.
I am talking about going to a country for at least a 1 week or more and really living with/like the locals. Eating what the locals eat, going to local festivals/celebrations, going off the beaten track, yes it also includes clubbing in major cities and going to fine beaches. Basically backpacking through the country on a budget.
So, i wanted to know where you have traveled so far, where you are going soon or in the near future? Also post any travel tips, places to find cheap airline tickets, cheap hotels in the country you went to, good places to visit, a place that's mentioned or not in Lonely Planet or Fodors, cheapest way to travel and the best way to travel in the country or region. Any helpful websites to find info on the country or region.
So far for myself:
Went:
Lived in India for 9 years and came to the states in '91, went back this past November for 2 months. Was one of the best things i have done in my life, opened my eyes to a lot of things that i wasn't aware of before or forgot about. Was backpacking so that was a lot of fun and it was very cheap, not expensive as i thought it would have been. If anyone plans on going there let me know if you need any help. I plan to go back in about a year or so.
Going:
As of right now i am making plans to go backpacking through South America in either the summer or winter of 2007. The countries i am going to are Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Brasil, Bolivia, and Argentina. Haven't picked out all the cites i want to go as of yet.
Will Go(Don't know when, but i have to go):
South East Asia which will include Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia and Southern China
South Pacific which will include as of now Samoa, Cook Islands, Easter Island, Fiji, French Polynesia, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu |

Good idea.
So far I've lived in a few countries....USA, UK, Italy, Switzerland. Currently have an apartment in Milan, Italy and live in the suburbs of NYC while attending NYU. Moving back to Milan in the summer for good although I will miss NYC I miss europe more.
After highschool which I attended here in the states I moved to Manchester in the UK to learn DJing/Sound Engineering and production. I quit to start working in the NYC area for a record company which I later quit due to me moving to Milan to work for a club there.
So far Ive been around the world. Austrailia/New Zeland, Hong Kong, Japan, Dubai, Brazil are some of the more exotic places Ive visted. Travelled around europe as most summers when I was younger I would live in the south of Italy...Italian/French parts of Switzerland and get on the train to Paris just to explore or other places around Europe.
Future I got moving to Milan and possibly going to South Africa with a friend for a Safari also my mate and I may be DJing in the small island of Noumea this year which will be quite cool.
Frequent Flyer Miles of 500,000+:tongue3
Travelling is cool if I could I wouldn't spend money on anything non essential and save up to travel more. Its great |

Hey I'm doing a similar trip for my graduation man, Winter 2007. I'm going to be in Panama anyway so I'm flying out to Colombia cause I can't go by land (there's no structure and of course the Guerrilla! :disbelief )Anyway, I'm going probably to Bogota and move from there around the country for a couple of days and then we're going to Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina will be our final destination. I would go up to Brasil and then Venezuela but I think it'd take too much time and I need to make this trip last only a couple of months! :D |

Ha. That happened to my friend and me. We were on a train for 7 hours from Zurich to Berlin with no seat reservations. We ended up hanging out in the dining car for most of the ride ordering random food every now and then to keep the waiter of our backs.
It's a good idea to get reservations on trains in Europe. A student pass/Europass does not guarentee you a seat on a train - you still need to pay 5EUR if you want to get a guarenteed seat! Whenever I go backpacking in Europe now, I always buy my reservation for the next leg of the journey as soon as I arrive in a city... no need to return to the station and a guarenteed seat! |

that happened to me. i was coming back from berlin from a vandit nite and i remember sitting on the floor with deekay and the train was moving so slow. then all my train connections (i think i had 3 that trip; grr where i was studying was such a pain to get to) got screwed up b/c of the late train. i wound up not getting seats on any train except for last one and i passed out in the smoking section. that sucked.
anyway i have backpacked thru europe for 6 weeks and have been to england quite a bit of times. i then studied in germany for a year and did a lot of travelling, focusing a lot on eastern europe. i have also been to south africa two times, and i just finished doing my masters over in australia (sydney). i will be going back to australia in august after my wedding and my visa passes, and living there for a few years b/c my fiance's job is over there and he is australian. he has a job that will allow us to travel once he has worked there for 2-3 years. we have talked about living in asia for a year, but now we just do not know and are trying to get thru things one step at a time. in the far future i see settling down in either NY, London or sydney, depending on many varying factors....
my dream trip is kenya and many different parts of africa. i somehow see life getting in the way, but maybe one day...
i have spent a lot of money on travelling, but i dont regret that money spent at all (i met my future husband so i cant complain :)). much of it was study abroad, and i gained an education and cultural awareness. it is a good thing and i think everyone should do it! |

totally agree.. nothing is worth more than experiences in life... material things come and go.. memories and in your case a husband and an education are priceless.. |

My first trip out of the country was also my first trip alone. I went to the Netherlands to visit a friend who had come to visit me a few times from there. I think that was the best way to take your first trip - I stayed with her family and I did everything the Dutch way. I rode bikes to take trains and I ate bread and cheese 6 times a day :P and unfortunately, each time I've been there was a huge trance festival in America and I never got to see any DJs!!
I've got some future plans:
Netherlands again and again, I think that place is awesome and I want to live there :P
Turkey
Iran (when foreign relations with them improve or I get a passport from another country :P)
Egypt
Ireland
Sweden
Australia
Japan |
