Rogers BT Throttling
View this Thread in Original format

I just got 3web High Speed Cable, which is basically equal to Rogers Extreme 6 Mbps, since 3web is a reseller of Rogers. The high speed is great except for the fact that my torrent downloads are slow as molasses. I know that Rogers throttles the speed on bit torrent downloads, and I just want to know a way around this. I have both “Utorrent”, and “BitComet”, and a simple internet connection (no router or home network). I heard something about port designation; however, I’m not too familiar with the concept. Please help me out in configuring my PC, and in overcoming this dilemma.

since, you're not behind a router, port forwarding won't mean much to you. i'm using azureus and it's been fine.

try looking here as well...

Hey there

first thing im going to recommend is that you do as i have, flip rogers the bird and sign up with magma. in my own opinion, WAY better service. I.E. magma generally charges less, and they dont throttle torrents.

that being said, my practical suggestion is that you set your bit torrent client's listening port to 1720. That's rogers VoIP port. I did this when i was still with rogers and it allowed me to connect properly.
again in my opinion, ABC (yet Another Bit torrent Client) is a good client to use for this.

Even though you're not behind a router... I think this may help. Best of Luck!

Try the latest beta of uTorrent.

http://www.utorrent.com/download.php

It features protocol encryption which will circumvent Rogers traffic shaping when you connect to other users that also have it enabled.

I believe it is enabled by default but allows for "Legacy incoming connections" so that you will still connect to clients that do not yet support encryption. If you find a torrent with enough users (1000+), try disabling that legacy option, then you should notice a big difference in speed since you would only be connecting to peers that support encryption! ;)

My fix was to DMZ my computer, install a decent firewall, and run BitComet. My router supports auto port forwarding too so that saved me some work.
I haven't had an issue since. Most of my speeds still suck but thats my own fault for picking rare torrents

Did not work for me.

Nothing seems to work for me. The download rate varies between 0-10kB/s but the upload rate is always at 0kB/s. I don't know what else to do?

Port 1720 in theory should work as it's Rogers VOIP port.

Is it as simple as changing it to 1720 in the client software? Mind you I do not have a router, just a simple internet connection?

1720 is fubar. 1755 is the new hotness :)
