at the moment im mixing down my track on cubase. then subjecting it to some mastering.
then i burn onto cd via windows media player.
what is the best way to get a 320 from this?
at the mo i rip the cd back into my pc as a 320kbps mp3. is this the best way?

Why not encode straight from the WAV file? You'll maintain 100% quality that way (dicounting compression of course). |

What's the point of ripping if you have the original wav on your computer? |

...and why would you burn with WMP? |

for making them downloadable over the net. a wav is too big. 320 is ok.
all i wanna know is whether i loose any quality(other than that of the mp3 compression)
on cubase you need to buy the mp3 pack to allow mp3 mixdowns. and that only caters to 256kbps.
so again...
is there anything wrong with this method? bearing in mind i burn audio cd's of the wavs for my use anyway. |

There's absolutely no point whatsoever in burning to a CD, then ripping to wav and compressing to mp3.
Just compress the master wav with a standard LAME encoder. |

first, listen to what all these other guys are saying buddy
you can get your master wav...then use a free mp3 encoder (lame) from the net to convert to a mp3 encoding of your choice
as for a 320 rip...thats a pretty large mp3 file depending on how long your track is...why not just go with 192 if you just want ppl to listen to it?
and why are you using wmp to burn cds? get a proper cd burning program!! |

When it comes to LAME's compression settings... My recommendation for best compromise between quality / file size:
-V 2 -m s
Result: ~200kbps variable bitrate, pure-stereo mp3. |

cheers guys.
but i still just wanna know if the current setup is detremental to the audio quality of my 320k mp3's...
im happy with how i do it. i just need to know if the quality will be as good as using 'lame'

okay since youre so adamant about doing it your way...
i *believe* that it depends on how your burning program converts the wav files into CDA CD format...(someone correct me here if im wrong)
so you might be losing some quality just because youre converting your audio files one more time than you really need to |
