Wow, last night was killer.
I was pretty nervous about the whole night not really knowing what to expect from TCM, so I just started playing tracks. Next thing I know the floor is pretty packed!!!
The best part of the night was Scott Kirkland asking me "Dave Molina, right?" with a mic in his hand. Then he turns on the mic, gives me props and the crowd went crazy.
Good night and it was great meeting many of you guys for the first time. We gotta do this again soon!!! |

Just back from the "office". Quickie review:
OH MY GAWD.
I got to Antro (first time in San Antonio BTW) at about 2130, close to the doors opening. I'm not sure who the first guy on the decks was when I walked through the door, but there was a bit of a crowd already milling about (I think most were looking for an anime convention or they'd just graduated high school, possibly both) but they were giving him no love whatsoever. His set wasn't horrible or anything, just very basic, and I guess folks just weren't warming up to it at the wee wee beginning of the night, knowing what was to come. Anyway, he was on until about 2300, when appeared a "tall Mexican in a DJ booth", proving the directions to finding Dave Molina weren't, in fact, a drink at the bar. He is also a somewhat tall Mexican, since my Caucasoid self could and did look down onto the top of his scalp.
The guy before Dave was doing a pretty heavy prog house set, and I guess that creeped Dave out a little (as he admitted when I finally managed to corner him away from his slavering fan base) but you never could have told. I wish, I wish, I wish I were one of those people who can ID tracks at the drop of a needle, but I'm not. Dave's set was killer, and the crowd apparently concurred, because it wasn't until he got on the decks that anyone got onto the dance floor. He kicked their asses for about an hour and a half or so.
And then, like Dave said, two odd-looking guys bullied him out of the booth, giving him sweet props all the way, and Crystal Method massacred the club. They played the most outlandish to some of their old sweet stuff to bits and pieces of Community Service II and Legion of Boom, and just altered on the fly. For their first time ever in San Antonio, they seemed to enjoy the crowd a lot, and the crowd seemed to enjoy them right back. I know I damn sure did, because my bones are still humming and I'm disoriented as hell. Of course, I also drank Antro out of Cabernet Sauvignon with chasers of rum and Coke all ing night, and then had to drive back to Hood on two hours' sleep. More on that in a sec.
For all intents and purposes, I know TCM has played to much larger crowds in much larger venues than Antro, but I think that even though there was still standing-room in the club at the height of the evening, we'll be seeing more of TCM coming through Texas and probably San Antonio in particular.
After Ken and Scott got done stretching out the crowd and drying it in the sun, ing Jarhead spectre ghost-boy Matthias, who didn't wear his Vandit shirt (which I hunted for all ing night), clambered up onto the decks (where I finally noticed what he looked like) and just kept the pressure going. I know he mentioned earlier being a bit concerned about how he was going to close for guys like TCM, but just like Dave he flexed his stuff and the transition was pretty flawless from my point of reference. I wish I hadn't gotten called after only about twenty minutes into Matthias' set and told that they needed me back this morning, because Matthias was booming even though the post-TCM crowd was thinning rapidly (posers and haters, all of 'em ;) ) and I had to bounce way earlier than I'd wanted to and get something resembling sleep to make the drive back up. So I owe Matthias a drink now for having to walk out on his closing set. Goddammit, I like it when the Marines do all the buying. :stongue:
I admit, I don't dance, and I spent a good deal of the night lurking in dark corners trying to get a feel for things in San Antonio's kind of vibe, which is a different vibe from Dallas altogether, and me being a Santonio virgin with zero backup didn't make things easier in the paranoia department, but I don't think things could have gone better than they did from a random-crunchy-clubgoer's perspective. I will definitely be making more trips to San Antonio in the not-too-distant future, and start getting a little more pro-social as well.
Going to go lie down now.:wtf: |

hahaha... well I'm glad that the floor didn't immediately clear out after Crystal Method's set as they were truly a difficult act to follow. I figured most of their fanbase were into breaks and I couldn't forsee how the crowd would react when transitioning to a 4/4 set. I did the best I coudl seeing I've never been a closer and from all the messages Ive been getting on my phone and mysace everyone seemed to enjoy it. I would have to give props to Dave for his opening set, really good stuff.
If you wanna buy me a drink Zeon, just show up to the ferry corsten show..if austin isnt out of bounds for overnight liberty call.:p |
