British court jails radical cleric Abu Hamza for seven years Tue Feb 7, 11:55 AM ET
Radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri has been sentenced to seven years in prison after being found guilty of incitement of racial hatred and soliciting murder.
Sentencing the hook-handed, one-eyed imam at London's Old Bailey court on Tuesday, Judge Anthony Hughes said Hamza used his authority to encourage his audiences that killing was a religious duty.
"I do not make the mistake of thinking that you represent Islamic thinking generally," he added, warning that Hamza could face further charges in relation to US claims that he supported an alleged terrorist camp in the Pacific Northwest.
He could also face losing his British passport, Hughes said, stating that Hamza's words, and their potential spread through followers, made him a "real danger" to the lives of innocent people around the world.
"You helped to create an atmosphere in which to kill has come to be regarded by some as not only a legitimate course but a moral and a religious duty in pursuit of perceived injustice," the judge said.
"No-one can now say what damage your words may have caused. No one can say whether your audience, present or wider, acted on your words... The potential for direct and indirect danger through what you said is simply incalculable."
Hamza, 47, who showed no emotion as the sentence was handed down, was convicted on six of nine soliciting-to-murder charges and two of four charges of "using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour with the intention of stirring up racial hatred".
He was also found guilty of possessing the 11-volume "Encyclopaedia of Afghani Jihad" containing information "likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism".
Prosecutors alleged that Hamza was a "recruiting sergeant" for terrorism and murder through his pronouncements against Jews, non-Muslims and what he called "apostates" -- lapsed followers of Islam or Arab leaders "too close" to Western governments.
The calls were made during a number of lectures and sermons advocating his own version of "jihad" -- literally "struggle" in Arabic -- to establish a worldwide Islamic caliphate under Sharia law.
In one of the speeches, Hamza, the former imam of Finsbury Park Mosque in north London, preached that killing non-Muslims was justified in any circumstances "even if there is no reason for it".
Prosecutor David Perry told the jury that Hamza used "the most dangerous weapons available -- a great religion, Islam, his position as a civic leader and the power of words, his own words".
"Not only that, you may also think he betrayed his true nature and his own recognition of the fact that in his talks he was preaching terrorism, homicidal violence and hatred," he added.
Hamza, ousted from the mosque in early 2003 and forced to preach to his followers in the street outside, made "clear encouragements" to kill during the lectures and sermons, many of which were recorded and played to the jury, the court heard.
"The defendant (Hamza) was a recruiting sergeant, a recruiting officer, for terrorism and murder. In addition to his role as recruiting officer for homicidal violence, we say he was also preaching hatred," Perry said.
The "Encyclopaedia of Afghani Jihad" included a dedication to Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden as well as chapters detailing how to make explosives, and advocated hitting high-profile international targets like the Statue of Liberty in New York harbour.

he claims to have lost the hand in a bomb explosion, but recently a new theory has come along. Perhaps he was punished the arabic way and had it cut off for either stealing or masturbating to playboy.
Anyway, this guy is a cunt who claims so much money from our government then stands on streets & tells people to kill us all. |

u mean the way some people believe is the muslim way  ....huge difference man :)
its poeple like that who give us a bad name...and the sad thing is that theyre so good at playing with poeple's minds. imo (as a muslim), killing or even verbally offending someone with different religiouse beliefs is the exact opposite of islam. god clearly told us to mind our own business, but these people keep on twisting his words and misinterpreting the metaphors in the koran to creat hatred for other people. they obviosly have their own secret reasons for doing so (this way they have authority and power over muslims, and some of them are invloved in arm dealing...ect) |

Is he guilty of conspiracy to committ an actual crime? It's not like I agree with the content of this guy's message, but as despicable as he is, I'm not afraid to defend his ability to express his opinions. Plus he's charged for possessing literature? wtf?
I've always despised Britain's anti-racial hatred legislation as it sets a dangerous precedent. I've expressed my views about the law in detail in this thread:

Technically, I suppose I could argue that the Danish cartoons incite racial hatred and ban them ... |
