Wait until you can run Windows on a MacBook Pro (Mac with Intel chip) and you're set ;)
It really depends on the size screen you want too... But the top brands I'd look at are the Sony Vaio (depending on the model, most of the stuff is WAY overpriced), Toshiba Satellite (Great prices, great laptops), or certain Dell laptops... HP, Compaq, Gateway, etc... are all crap.
EDIT: Just realized you needed it for recording and stuff... Definetly go for a 17" screen, minimum 1GB ram, and as big as an HD you can get, 5400RPM for sure... If you can find these in Montreal, look for the Sony Vaio AX Series, AMAZING laptops = 1GB Ram, 160GB HD, 17" screen, etc... but it will run you about $2300US = $3000+ CAN easily... If you don't mind Macs, go for the new MacBook Pro (Intel chip), amazingly reliable and fast, but I can't stand Macs so until they can run Windows, you won't see me with one! |

Im sorry but if you want to be serious about recording/editing/production/live play, Mac is the ONLY way to go.
There are many models to choose from, the above mentioned new Macbook pro are quite interesting but a Powerbook or even an Ibook have some nice features.
If you want to turn away from the laptop, concider the new Imac with the Intell chips in em. Less costly than most worthwhile laptops but totally smokes the stats (its the one Sasha is curently using). Only drawback, its not as portable as a laptop, but is still much more than a regular PC.
The only thing that you have to remember with all laptops (PC and Mac)is, if you want good sound with more than one line out (more than one sound playing at a time, like 2 + chanels of a mixer) you need an outboard soundcard, M-Audio makes some great ones i suggest checking em out. These typically connect to your laptop via firewire.
Hope this helps, if you have any more quest dont hesitate. It might help us to know exactly what you plan on using this computer for, wich programs... |

Get a Mac. All current pc laptop will be good to trash in 6 months when "vista" (aka badly copied OS X) will be out. In addition, Vista will not have a firewall built in, you'll have to pay "Mafiasoft" 49.99$ US for security. They are going to take more money out of their faithful users to have a grip on their machines".
Please, if you want to get into serious production, choose what digweed and Sasha picked. A Mac.
Mac comes loaded with some very cool software free such as Garageband for basic production and they donŐt crash. |
