Hi guys, I am looking at buying another PC. I have looked at the range of Intel processors out there and I am undecided which to buy!
I hear Intel are ready to release Pentium 5 or something! Can anyone shed any light on this? I don't want to buy another PC and it be out of date the next day!
Cheers! |

Word of this so-called "Pentium 5" has been around since 2003. So were expectations of 5-10Ghz processors. For the past 2 years, processors really haven't moved very far in terms of speed, hovering around the 3-3.4 mark for ages. It seems Intel have reached the physical pinnacle of speed, so are now looking at alternative ways to get more grunt.
I wouldn't hold off just because of the P5 rumour. |

| Usually what you buy is much cheaper a month later. I stick to the rule of buying the mid range CPU that has some power, but does not cost $1K just for the CPU. I am an AMD fan so I don't really know what to suggest for Intel, but as was already stated already, I wouldn't wait for announced processors that aren't on the market yet. |

speed wise, you won't see anything moveing past 4~ghz for a while. amd and intel have heat problems past 4~ghz.
amd will be coming out with a new socket that supports ddr2 memory. thats what i'm going for next. as for intel, some of the latest rumors i heard is that they are tossing the whole pentium line and starting with something new. i would wait until later towards the end of the year when windows vista comes out to see what both companies have to offer. |
