Check out my mix cd in the dj section. Itīs far away from the psy-mainstream. Fat, rolling basslines and a rather dark atmosfear.
Check out the artists from sweden (oerebro)or finland. Their sound is much deeper than the isratrance everyone knows.

This snappy kick of which you speak is what makes psy unique. From the very first day my friend introduced me to psy, that is the one thing that always stood out to me. I personally love that snappy kick sound along with the amazing basslines characterized by full on psytrance. There is nothing better than a well made full on psytrance song for getting the blood flowing and the body dancing IMO.
On a side note, I saw J00F the other night at a mainstream club where his whole set was pretty much full on psytrance. Most people had never heard this sound before but the place was going crazy. I had to sit back and smile. :) |

| actually a thick, meaty, digital, propah bassy thump is one of the reasons i love psy trance, over most hard house and some hard trance which seems to have more of a metallic clang kick drum to it. |

First off, there are about a zillions styles of kick used in psytrance. psy progressive, dark and a lot of techno psy (wizzy noise, Xerox & Illumination) use different kicks to what your referring to. But since your referring to the low cut kick, I'l assume you mean full-on.
If you stop to think about it, it makes sense. Psytrance is more rhythm driven than commercial trance, which is essentially based around long 32-64 bar melodies with little enphasis on the bassline once the actual melody takes over. Full-on psytrance however is built around the bassline with shorter riffs rather than long melodies. Hence for the bassline to be clear and unmudied especially on large sound systems, the kick needs to be cut lower than with club trance to allow the basslines to do their stuff. Also, there is a lot more going on with psytrance in terms of fx. Again, by cutting the kicker higher (sometimes around 100Hz) it allows for greater headroom in the mix and generally a clearer sound overall.
All of this doesnt mean unless it actually sounds good, so I would suggest going somewhere to hear it loud unough for the intended effect. The clarity you'll hear in a psy bassline due to the thinner kick will blow you away. Not only that, but the kick itself is largely undistorted or 'boomy' and sounds anything but thin. Definately catch Infected Mushroom if you can as they have pretty much based their productions around this idea. |
