| bleh. It was a movie highlighting the boredom of inactivity in a warzone. If it was a The Learning Channel Original Movie, good. But I wouldn't pay $9 to see it in a theater |

if it's on the int0rweb, can you link it? |
sorry, a friend photocopied it and gave it to me some months ago right after we went to see it and some random googling just now yielded nothing.
the gist of the article was that it was one of the only war films that acts as a countervailant to militarism itself. in the jarhead scene where the soldiers are getting hyped up by watching "apocalypse now" tidbits scored to "flight of the valkerye", the author noted how ostensibly anti-war films made by liberal guys like oliver stone or f.f. copolla contain elements of fetishized violence that can easily be subverted into pro-war propaganda.
since jarhead is ultimately about the buildup that never comes, it's a straight war movie that we're forced to accept on its own terms; symbolic subtext and imagery, both for and against the war, is difficult to locate (it's also why ideologues on both sides of the fence had problems with it).
other reviewers touched on these themes too, but that particular essay wrapped it all up nicely. i still don't think i'll ever like how mendes cheaply substitutes style for profundity.
apologies for the ramble. |

none what so ever, especially for you. why even bother about it? i thought of it as interesting, being a film-fanatic, having studied film & photography & made countless 'a bit more serious' movies at home/in media-school.

An "ok" movie - good to see only once. Doesn't really stir up emotion thus failing as a drama, has practically no action thereby failing as an action movie.
I don't know, maybe I've seen too many better 'war' movies. |

I think it's closer to a documentry (esp given that it's based on real experiances). |

it was both, shield before the invasion and storm after.
best metroid related quote to apply to the game and the movie -
Anthony 'Swoff' Swofford: Well, what would you be doing if you were a civilian? Staying up late, jacking off, playing Metroid - trying to get to that ninth level?
Troy: You know what happens when you get there?
[laughs]
Troy: Nothing. You just start all over again.
good movie, without being amazing. very rare these days| |
