Hey, I'm interested in learning about lighting systems and how that whole area works. I'm basically just gathering knowledge, but I've also been thinking about purchasing a small lighting system for personal uses (Me and a couple of friends have been wanting to organize some small rave parties out in the countryside :) ).
I was just wondering if there were any online discussion boards about Club lighting systems and such?? I'm just really curious :D |

The best advice I can give you to learn about the material is to go on manufacturers websites and learn what the different things do, how to use them, install them, maintain them, program them etc.
Also take a look at sound system magazines as they often have ads for lighting equipement.
There's so many brands out there I'm not sure if I could list them all but have a look at martin lights, grand ma ( some of the best control boards out there), etc etc

This is a forum that's a little active but not enough to my liking:

Lastly this is a magazine based in the US
http://www.clubsystemsinternational.com/
They deal with new clubs, equipement etc, and it's great to learn about the way it's done elsewhere. Top quality read ( a lot of articles are available on the website )!
If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask as I've worked with a lot of different setups and I'm pretty knowlegable. |

For small lighting systems, there's no place better than ebay.
Proper lights are controlled by a protocol called DMX. When you buy a light, look for that feature. DMX allows you to fully control a lighting system with a dedicated controller, or synchronise a set of identical sound-activated lights together.
Most intelligent lights run on mains power without a problem, but if you want to get serious you would need a 3-phase power supply and a distribution board or dimmer rack. A distribution board essentially turns 3-phase into a high powered 12-way power outlet, whereas a dimmer rack has a variable voltage output enabling you to dim and fade certain lights (ie par56 or par64's) via DMX.
Hope that makes sense. |
