BTG, if you've ever skateboarded, it's somewhat similar to that. You turn both boards the same way, heel toe, heel toe. So if you have some familiarity with that, it can make it easier.

5 years ago i cracked my tailbone my very first day snowboarding. everytime i went toeside i ed up and... it hurt. by the next time i went i had the hang of it. 5 years later i only fall when i dont land a trick. as far as just going down the hill i could do it with my eyes closed and my hands behind my back, assuming i wasnt sorrounded by trees.

like most people said, first time you go, you'll fall on your ass and your knees a lot but by the end of the day, regardless if it hurts, you'll have gotten the hang of it. if you can, you should take one of those 1 hour warm up lessons. they'll teach you a lot of the technical stuff that you had no idea about. you can watch other people board, but honestly, as a beginner, its a bad plan to copy what others do. PM if you want me to elaborate

What about those who only have access to real mountains and no artificial slopes :p

....

Ok first do you know if you're regular or goofy?

Second of all the most important thing you have to keep in mind at all times ( it'll come naturally after a while ) is that you should almost always be on the effective edges of the board ( it's basically the edges running the whole length of the board on both sides ).
If you keep the board flat while turning snow gets stuck and you basically fall over. If you want to turn left you'll be on the left edge, right turn right edge.

The board should only ever be flat on the base when you want to go exclusively straight ( and you could go real fast like that so it's not really something to do right away for newbies ). When you usually go down hills your goal is to do small/big turns the whole way down.

Another little pointer which sounds pretty stupid for those in the know but it's great for beginners is to shift your whole upper half in the direction of where you want to go and point to it with your hand ( do a fist with your hand that looks a little less ghey :p ).

Lastly look at other people's technic, that helps tons.

Enjoy :)
