| Hi. I've been doing some research and seriously considering getting a setup. Right now I'm looking at probably 2 Cdj 800s. That's all I really know. I'm leaning towards cdj b/c of the cost of vinyl. I'd like to keep it to about $1k. I have no clue what mixer. I'd like to get a 4 channel ,so I can add two turntables later, but I have a feeling that will be out of the price range. As far as turntables go what is the difference between the 1200s and the 1210s? If you could give me an ballpark of each piece that would be great. If you think I'm completely off base let me know. Like I said I'd like to keep it to about 1k. |

hey man, I tell you what I did :)
what state you live in?
What I did was:
Bought a Technics sl1200mkII and stanton str8-100 turntables Used they both came with carts and needles (Ortofon Nightclub S and Stanton iTrack) for about $300 dollars. I bought it from Daddys Junky music and their policy is sick. Not sure if you have that store in your area but I highly recommend it. I got extended warranty for 1.2 years for 15 bucks or something. Then I picked up a Numark Matrix 2 mixer with 1 year warranty (used) for about 90 bucks. Thats about $400 all together. Im saving up for serato scratch live or its alternative (DJ Decks) so I can control mp3s with special time coded vinyls. That will be roughly not even a grand (DJdecks is only about $230 with decend external soundcard for my laptop) thats only like roughly $700
That gives me best of both worlds (I can load CDs thru DJ Decks, mp3s and vinyls)
If you go with Turntables look into technics sl1200mkII they have proven themselves over time.
GOod luck
also check out www.craigslist.com and choose city you are closest too if you are looking into used gear. |

CDJ-800s are roughly $480 a piece.
That leaves you with $40 for a four-channel mixer and headphones.
The cheapest 4-channel mixer I would consider is the Vestax VMC-004, which is around $300.
Headphones will run you around $100.
Can you save up another $500? Remember, you'll have to pay to download a ton of tracks, as well.
The difference between 1210s and 1200s is, for the most part, color. 1200=silver, 1210=black. There are exceptions, depending on your country. The differences vary between marks. 1200(1210)MKIIs start at $400. |

| If I were to switch gear and go for 1200mkII what carts/needles should I get? Are the 1210s and better than the 1200s? I'm looking at mkIIs of both. What are some good two channel mixers? If I can save another $500 what 4 channel could I get? I'm in Indiana (nw Indy) if that helps at all. |

That's really the only difference, unless you plan on taking your turntable to Europe for a spell.
I would recommend Ortofon Concorde DJ-S. Other people will recommend others.
Keep in mind, that two 1200MK5s with cartridges and styli will cost about the same as two CDJ-800s, but records will cost much, much, more than downloads. But, records are a hell of a lot more fun, and I totally recommend that you go with 1200s.
Once again, 1200 and 1210 aren't important. MK2, M3D, MK5, and M5G, that's where the differences lie. I would go for the MK5 (or M3D if you're buying used).
If you want to go cheap, a nice 2-channel is the Vestax VMC-002. Great quality for the price. |

where you live
the difference is the voltage selector switch on the 1210 for european current
you can get the 1200 in both silver and black and i believe you can also get the 1210 in both |

Okay go with this...
2 CJ 200s (some of the same features of the 1000, in a smaller package. Doesn't have the feel of the 800 or 1000 but will still suit you well)
Price: $399 x 2 = $799
1 Vestax VMC-004 Mixer
Price: $299
Total: $1098 + tax (whatever it is where you live)
So your talking roughly $1,200, if you want the CDJ 800s, your talking another $200 on top of that.
2 Technics turntables will cost you anywhere between $600 (if you get them used) or $800 if you get them new. You can get some Stanton ones for less, but if your serious about it, go for Techs. Depending on what your playing though, you may be able to get all the tunes you want on MP3 or WAV online, and wont need TTs. The only other option is to get TTs and use final scratch, but if your not going to collect vinyl also why have TTs and CDJs? Yeah it's nice to have it all, but if you just want to do this as a hobby (and not as a career) then either one will suit you fine by itself. You could even get a two channel or three channel mixer for less than the best 4 channel mixer in it's price range, the VMC-004. Behringer makes some for less but they are very cheaply made.. |

| Okay and your going to need some headphones, the best (inexpensive) ones I can recommend are the pair I own. They suit me fine so I haven't bothered to upgrade them (yet). They are the "Senheiser HD-212" headphones, and although they aren't the HD 25s, they are probably the best budget headphones you'll fine. They should be around $59.99 |

| What if I wanted to get a better two or three channel mixer? What would you recommend then? What are the differences betweend the mk2s, mk5s, and m3ds? Do you think it's pointless to go w/ vinyl? I'm leaning towards it now b/c it's the original and I will be able to play mp3s if I buy final scratch. |

Ok...three channel mixers...
1. Vestax PCV 275 or PCV180 (the new model, you can probably find either or for $299 or less if you buy used.
2. Numark DXM 09 (Numark usually makes crap, but this I've heard is a good mixer) $349
3. Stanton M.304 (Stanton makes a little better than Numark, same price as the Numark)
Two channel...
1. Denon DN-X100 or DN-X300 (seems to be a fairly good, beginners two channel mixer, Denon has a good reptuation) $199 for the 100, $299 for the 300.
2. Pioneer DJM 300 (Would work well with any Pioneer CDJ, is digital, and has plenty to work with for a two channel mixer) $399.
3. Numark DXM-06 (A lot like the DXM 09, but two channel) $249.99
Haven't used most of these besides the PCV 275 which I own, and fooled with the DJM 300 and DXM-06, but these are the best I could find in their price range. The really good ones will require a lot of $$, and you might not even need all the features of them. The PCV 275 has been an all around great mixer for me, and lasts a long time, pretty simple to use.
I personally think if you can't afford vinyl, don't get TTs. If your just going to use final scratch then just go the CD route, and get either the Pioneer CDJ 200 or the Denon DN-S3500, which both play MP3s. |

Name a price, and I'll name you some mixers. | quote: | | What are the differences betweend the mk2s, mk5s, and m3ds? | MK5 replaced the M3D. The main difference is between the MK2 and the others. There is a click at 0 pitch on them, and it's harder to pitch accurately around that area. MK5s and M3Ds are well worth the extra cost for that reason alone. MK5s add to the M3D an improved tonearm for less skipping, and an LED popup light, which will last forever. | quote: | | Do you think it's pointless to go w/ vinyl? I love spinning vinyl, and would recommend that all beginner DJs start with it instead of CDs. |

| Okay. My most recent feelings are this: 2 1200/1210 m3ds. I'm not too sure what carts. Mixer wise I'm leaning towards a pioneer 300. Like I said I'm looking to keep this around $1k. Basically what mixer do you recommend that will fit in that price range? Or am I going to have increase the amt. I'm willing to spend? |
