Looking to buy a new computer

I have what will most likely be considered a dumb question, I havn't done my homework on it cause I've been working alot of hours but, what's the difference between SDRAM and RAM?

The set up I'm looking at:

Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 640 w/HT Technology (3.2GHz,800FSB)

Operating System Genuine Windows® XP Media Center 2005 Edition

Memory 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 400MHz - 2 DIMMs

Thing is, I can't seem to get a straight answer on this, is SDRAM replacing RAM now or are they referring to permanent memory storage?

I'm sure this seems ignorant to some of you here but honestly I just havn't had the time to sift through hundreds of articles and figure it all out.

Can anybody give me a straight up, un-sugar-coated answer here?

sdram is old
you want ddr (but it clearly states you've got ddr up there :) )

SDRAM is a type of RAM, vs other types like RDRAM or the older EDO DRAM. As far as I know all system memory is DRAM(dynamic RAM, and SDRAM is synchroneous DRAM). DDR SDRAM is double date rate (DDR), and DDR2 is dual channel so run in pairs it is faster. SRAM, or static RAM, is much faster and more expensive and is used for cache and I am not sure what else.

As stated above, you want DDR, and if it is DDR2 you want it in pairs as the PC you showed the specs for. As also stated above, non DDR SDRAM is old and I don't think you would see it listed in any new PCs these days.

He's asking for a pc. No need to force him a mac.

This is exactly why he should get a Mac! Everything works perfectly out of the box, no fannying about with anything, everything is so simple & well designed. Saving countless hours of frustration that you get with windows & PC. Which means you can get things done a lot faster, leaving you with more time for your life. I have never looked back since choosing Apple. Windows is sh1te, full stop.

again, get a life. This topic is not about you. He's asking for help on a pc, not a mac. He chose to buy a pc, if you have a problem with that try masturbating, it calms the mind.

Where did you even read he wants a mac. it is not an option. there's your full stop.

definately either buy a apple or a pc made specifically for music production. they are more money but you wont get problems. and thats the bottom line. my pc was £200 quid more than a prebuilt one but it came with a m audio card/cubase and quiet case/fan. it was built by music technicians instead of bored to death factory workers who dont give a . and everything works perfect. unlike my friends who bought a 'pc world' pc and thought it would work better..

I just built mine myself. easy as hell, and if there is someting to complain about it's (almost) always yourself to blame :)
Never had a crash while working with audio ever. In fact it is so damn hard to crash it that if I sometimes load the cpu too much I can't press the stop button and the track keeps playing endlessly :stongue:
Low Profile
Some people prefer PCs, others prefer macs. I prefer PCs (and I'm not trying to persuade you to switch from your mac, so please don't do that to us :) )

And if I were you, I wouldn't get any of that stuff :p My target would be a socket 939 AMD X2 3800+, it's a 64 bit dual core processor, and it's not so expensive. Get DDR, not SDRAM, sdram is old and has been replaced by DDR, which is now being replaced by DDR2 (which IMO, isn't all that better...). If you decide on AMD, try to steer away from nForce 4 mainboards, I've heard they sometimes give you crap when working with low-latency audio cards.

And run Windows XP Pro, the words Media Center just yell out "Consumer product" a bit too much for me :) (I've never tried it, don't know much about, but still have very little faith in it...)
