Winter Warning

How you get to work on Thursday morning may literally be a matter of degree. If temperatures stay on the warmer side, you’ll be driving through a lot of rain. If not, it could be a treacherous and slippery commute.

As if Wednesday’s headaches on the 401 weren’t enough, the repeat performance 24 hours later could be even worse all over the city.

Environment Canada has issued a severe weather warning for much of the province, over a disturbance heading here from Oklahoma. It will start as snow sometime after midnight, leaving a few centimetres behind, followed by a period of freezing rain and ice pellets.

That will fall all night long and depending on what the thermometer says by the time you wake up, it could make for a hazardous morning rush hour.

If temperatures stay on the mild side, the miserable mixture will turn to just heavy rain, washing much of it away but making the sidewalks a slushy and splashy mess.

If not, get ready to leave earlier than usual and practice your winter driving skills. Either way, conditions are expected to be less than ideal.

If it does fall mostly as rain, there’s a big risk of flooding near lakes and rivers in the city, so parents are advised to keep their kids away from the edges.

Whatever happens, we’ll be getting off easy. Areas to the north, including Muskoka, Parry Sound, and North Bay, can expect to be shovelling out from as much as 25 centimetres of snow before the storm moves on to the Quebec border.

“Motorists and pedestrians should exercise extreme caution and adjust travel plans accordingly,” the weather bulletin warns.

“Untreated surfaces will quickly become icy and slippery resulting in dangerous winter travel conditions. This storm will likely have a major impact on the morning rush hour in Southern Ontario and the evening rush hour for Eastern Ontario locales.”

The fun continues on Friday, when it gets a lot colder and breezier in the city. That will create not only bitter windchills, but cause all that rain to freeze, creating yet a new nightmare for commuters.

Things won't improve until the weekend, and by then it appears we'll all need one.

The weather experts admit it’s tough for them to say exactly who will get hit the worst, because they’re not certain how the disturbance will track when it hits Ontario.

But one thing does seem certain – that early taste of spring Wiarton Willie predicted on Groundhog Day may have come in January, the warmest winter month in Toronto history.

So far, February doesn’t seem to be quite as obliging.

The fun will start when I get to work at 8:30am and start driving. Freezing rain warnings, snow, this will be good lol! Last time we had freezing rain, I saw so many crashes, and I had to drive around super slow all over the place.

Drive safe everyone.
