I was thinking that too.
Also.. i HAVE a feeling that he didn't mean to say it in a derogatory sense. Perhaps he was trying to be hip with the kids and learn their lingo to gain acceptance with his students.
If he had a history of being a racist by using the term and other such racist language, then I would prolly think otherwise. |

inappropriate for a teacher to use it, IMHO, as they should be setting an example with proper use of the English language and not perpetuating slang...but is this a case of a teacher maliciously using a "racial slur"?
no.
it's all about intent. there's (generally) not derogatory or hateful intent involved when two black people use the term 'nigga' with each other...and there's not *necessarily* any derogatory or hateful intent just because it's a white person using it. What IS inappropriate is the context in which it was used her...in a classroom.
with these cases, it's as if the colour of your skin, your ethnicity, your sexual orientation, etc. give members of the group carte blanche to use certain terms, while anyone using it who's not part of the group is automatically labelled a hate monger.
ridiculous.
I agree with his suspension...I agree with him not being fired...hopefully he's learned that what he did wasn't "hateful" or "racist", but that it was inappropriate given his position as a teacher in a classroom.
(the news coverage was funny as though, LOL) |

so many people/kids use that word so frequently among themselves without any implications, but the white prof trying to fit in uses it and now he's gotta lose his job over it?

If teachers can't use the word, then they must not allow the students to use the word either.
If it's such a foul word, they should ban it school-wide. |

| even though the teacher apologized, he still seems defensive of what he did. how old is he? 10 yrs old? he should just shut the fock up and man up to his mistakes instead of whining about like a bitch. nigga and nigg3r are the same thing. they should never be used by a person in authority. |
