1) 99/00 Acura 3.2 TL
If you can swing the Type-S model, by all means do it.

2) 99 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro
SWEET JESUS CHRIST STAY THE HELL AWAY

3) 01 Volvo S40 1.9T
Rebadged/rebodied Mitsubishi Carisma. Take this how you will.

4) 99 Volvo S80 T6
Good car, boring as all but the safest by far.

If you're feeling super awesome, see if you can find a Volvo 850 T5-R.

This would be my choice. Decent performance, excellent reliability, good resale value, good gas milage. As Cale mentioned, try and get a type S. They are sweet!

2) 99 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro
Will probably be out of warranty, so maintainance costs will be huge. Remember, there is a turbo in the car, and that could fail, replacements are expensive. Late 90's Audi's are not known for their reliability. Build quality not that great. I am talking out of experience. I used to own a B5 Audi.

3) 01 Volvo S40 1.9T
Major torque steer. Horrible handling. Piece of crap. Stay away.

4) 99 Volvo S80 T6
Do not know much about this model, but read: torque steer. I will be biased here, because Volvo's are not my definition of a decent car.

Hope this helps.

I can recall him having only one major problem (can't recall what it was). He tends to drive his vehicles until the 300,000 mark.

yah i was reading an article at the Honda Dealership, where they took the total number of average problems after 3 years.

Volvo was 1 place higher than Pontiac at 67 problems..

Acura was Number 1 at 12..

i totally agree, the late 90's and early 2000 generation volvo's have been lacking reliablity and performance but their new models have been getting better. those generation audi's aren't that good also. acura is probably your best bet. very good overall car out of the bunch.

and my final overall opinion or tip is to stay away from domestic's cause i think they are put together poorly and use poor quality materials. also, what ever car you decide on getting, research as much as you can about it to find out what to look for when buying as used car. go on car forums for that make or model you want to buy and ask what should you look for when buying one used and what should you expect to go wrong.....it'll help. Trust me!

I'd go with the 3.2TL or S40. Volvos aren't cheap to maintain, but they'll last forever...Acura redeemed themself quite well with the TL series, IMHO...definitely go for an S model, if possible. Quality, reliable, performance, etc. Nice all-around package.

Obviously out of the price range, but the newer S40 2.0T is *nice*...I almost bought one last fall but decided to focus on buying a place instead...I think they're a fair bit better than the 1.9T they replaced though.

Thanks alot all of u. So I guess since the Acura 3.2TL is praised by a majority here, I'm going to have to take a closer look at that. Im a little suprised not alot of people picked the A4. Well thanks again all!

The new S40 is actually based on the Mazda 3, and I beleive the new generation European Focus (they all share the same platform).

I really like it! I almost bought one too, but ended up with a Mazda 6 (Volvo's lease rates were way too high at the time!)

i will tell you this about the A4 1.8T. Its a very nice car, great in the snow, etc. However, only get it if you can afford the maintenance.

It is a very unreliable car, and maintaining it is costly. Also, there are a lot of Audi's on the street, and now many dealers. Getting appointments for your car is troublesome because you'll often have to wait a very long time (as much as 3-4 weeks sometimes).

As nice as the car is, if i could go back in time, i wouldnt get it.

IMO, you're best off getting that Acura 3.2

I've got a friend with a 2001 Volvo S60 T5 (5 cyl hi-pressure turbo) and it's much faster than I would have expected. Lots of safety features too.

It seems really solid but routine maintenance is expensive and he's afraid of what the cost might be if serious repairs are ever required. Big turning radius makes it hard to park sometimes.
