Great site I found - enjoy.

Your source for BYOW (Bring your own wine) restaurants in Ontario.
Restaurants from Toronto, Ottawa, Niagara, and other Ontario cities that allow you to bring your own wine to enjoy with their food.

Is this new in TO??

Been doing this here in mtl for many years now...Its amazing...The waiters open and serve it too....

Great way to have a nice bottle of vino and not pay triple the price.

I went to a GREAT place in Montreal called L'Academie and we brought our own wine (my first BYOW experience) and it was fabulous! No corking fee and since we drank all the wine, I'm not sure if they'd let you take it home or not - I bet they would though.

I wish Ontario would catch up with Quebec. The BYOW restaurant selection in Toronto is pretty poor and most locations aren't in the downtown core. And the corking fees (that is, uncorking it) are rediculously expensive!! Plus, some restaurants don't even let you take home your wine if you don't finish it... how does that make sense, you paid for it!

So I'd caution people and advise that you really look at the fine print and call the restaurant ahead of time for details. Otherwise, you might end up paying more than you expected.

Also note, sometimes the corking fee is per volume (not per bottle) and it varies depending on the day of the week.

If you want a really great BYOW experience, go to Montreal.

What are the 'un'corking fees like in Montreal? I only went to one place so I don't really know.

i looked into this a while back, and most places in toronto, charge outrageous corkage fees, like $15-$20 bucks, or there are very obscure and out of the way restaurants.

my girlfriend and I figured it was actually cheaper to pay for a bottle than bring your own and pay $15 for corkage - and restaurants have better selections of wine usually

now montreal is a whole different ball game - i love restaurants and BYO in montreal - i would move there just for the food!ß

there usually are none in my experience....I've done it often and never been charged....

And on the Academie Tip.....Great place.... I often go there as the number one BYOW place here cuz theres a liquor store literaly next door, which helps, and the menu is constantly changing as there are Professional Cooking Students in the Kitchen.

Are there not many places in TO?

"Outrageous" depends on the cost of the wine you plan on drinking.

I have found the restaurants usually do 2X (sometimes 1.5X for less expensive wines) the cost of the wine.

So if you have a retail $50 bottle - expect to pay around $100 for it in a restaurant. Paying a $15 corkage and bringing your own $50 bottle is a much better option.

I've been cellaring a $100 bottle of 1996 Rioja for the last 2.5 years. I would imagine that this bottle would be upwards of $200 in a restaurant. I intend to drink the bottle this weekend while I'm out for dinner - so a $15 or $20 corkage is menial.
