DaveT - Always in the Dark

Last night I was in the mood just to put together mix that was just dark. Not completely dark, but dark...so here it goes. Lots of older tracks which I still cannot get enough of....

Probably the best mixing of any of the mixes I've done so far...actually, it's probably by far the best mixing. Actually think I'll be listening to this mix a bit on muh ipod...

Again, done entirely using headphones: left year for cue, right ear for master

i skimmed through it and i first asked myself 'this isnt dark, why did he call it dark?' then i heard some songs breakdown and i was like 'ok, yea sure its nice'

im assuming this was all freestyle cause the cue points didnt sound planned at all. you should have atleast tried to adjust a few off beatmatches it would be better.

is the recording in a bad quality, or have you recorded on high volume something or is it just my laptops speakers not handling it?

phantom manor was good, made me get up at work at dance!!

plus i really think ferry corsten - punk would have been a great addition in the set and i think you know where it would suit the most.

not bad for a freestyle and NOT BAD AT ALL for headphones.

p.s. how long have you been djing for?

I don't own FC - Punk. And that is one I am sick of. :p

Recording quality is largely because some of the tracks were ones I had on vinyl and had someone at work digitize long ago (and only in 160kbps).

Then it was all just recompressed again at 160kbps.

My issue is largely with EQs...I don't have proper studio speakers, at all....and even using just ($50) headphones make it even harder. There are sometimes where it sounds nice and even on my headphones then I'll play it on through my stereo receiver and cringe. :p

Yes, recorded at a high volume. I do have a normalized version but I like my stuff loud. My receiver, headphones, and all are able to handle it, at least. :p

And correct, absolutely no planned cue points. Hell, for most of the tracks I never even thought about putting them in a mix before. I just went through my tiny library and picked ones to plop in there, hehe... :p

Using Ableton to quick adjust some off beatmatches isn't too easy....at least I dunno of an easy way..plus, Tiesto gets away with a whole lot worse, lol, and he uses vinyl/CDs.

I don't really DJ. I just mess around with Ableton Live. I won't even consider doing anything serious until I get a mixer to use with it...if I ever get a mixer to use with it. So I just mess around with it...have been off and on for the past several months, with a few month lull in there because work was so busy I was just too lazy too. Probably have messed with it more in the last few weeks than I had in the previous 5 months. I'm still definitely a beginner...and as they say, practice makes perfect. Just plop them up here for download just to get some feedback....cause I could think something is amazing personally while everyone else has issues. :p

tiesto doesnt get away with off beatmatches i tell you that much. at least he doesnt get away from me. but tiesto adjusts his beatmatch if he goes off as soon as he notices. plus its always harder to do the job in a larger environment. i dont erally like or care about tiesto so im not trying to defend him.

i would actually say that beatmatching done by ableton should be better than doing with cdj. my expectation from someone beatmatching with ableton is way higher than cdj user.

you need to invest on some equipment bro, atleast some decent headphones and monitors. plus you need to record at a lower level.

Tiesto adjusts his beatmatches? Sometimes :p

And actually, the key for real good beatmatching Ableton is to adjust some points in the waveform before you even use the track. Other DJs out there remaster and touch up the beginning/end of the tracks to fit in with their stuff to make it better aligned. Ableton is real good at getting a close beatmatch but matching stuff up with CDFJs is easier, IMO.

I wish I could invest in some equpiment. I have a baby on the way though....beside, I just mess with Ableton for fun. Not taking it that seroiusly for right now.

Thanks for your feedback, BTW...most of the stuff you express I am completely away of. Just trying to worry more about good programming (flow) in my mixes :P
