Ok.. so it goes like this...
Realizing that PVD was sold out on Monday - Disheartening
Spending all week working all my connections to get a ticket - Dissapointing
Reading Woody pump it up today - Determining me to find a way in.
Getting a call at 9:15pm saying, your going to PVD from Bob - Priceless
This is what life is about, making miracles happen.
ok,ok enough of the hype.
Get to Vanguard at like 10. Get right in, fast and easy. Line took like 3 minutes. Avalon needs to take some lessons from these guys, because they get you oin fast! Listen to Jerry Bonham play one of his better sets till 1. Like clockwork, Paul comes rolling through at 12:50pm. Sets up all his gear, signs a few autographs. Smiles a lot.
Then he is in, doesn't waste anytime. Throws a nice track to get the night going right. From that point on, he does what he does. Kills the dance floor. The energy in the place was amazing. All good vibes, no anger or anything like that. For being completely sold out, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. When I saw him at ICE before NYE it was sardine land. This was packed, but I could move around and I have been to Vanguard when it was just as packed. The Funktion One bass in Vanguard is ridamdiculous. Insane with Paul behind the decks. Till this day, his kicks and basslines are the most powerful I have ever heard. So after careful examination watching him play. I determined, he is producing any voodoo magic on the computers. He isn't even using Ableton Live 5. He was running Live 4 on the Laptop on the right and Serrato on the left. He could essentially upgrade to Live 5 and get rid of the other laptop. But having two laptops makes him unique and it works for him. I didn't have the notepad to do tracklistings, but he played Crush, Murder was the bass,The Other Side, Play It Louder, Playground that's all I can remember right now.
What made this unique to the other times I have seen him, is that he was totally into it tonight. Dancing around, having fun, engaging the crowd, singing (not live on a mic or anything). Not like I have seen him before, where he was all in the computers, and not with the crowd. He was totally focusing on the crowd, every chance he got. This made tonight and Paul extraordinary. I had a great time, danced my ass off and was and still am completely sober! (Thanks Sweetcandy and DJ Faded!) Such a great night, and a lot better than the trainwrecking I heard that was going on at Spider Club. ;)
Now, do I go to Avalon tomorrow?? We shall see. I know I will definately be at Spundae no matter what, maybe I will leave and head to Avalon around 2-3.. We shall see!
Special thanks goes to Woody for getting me all pumped up, that made tonight so much more special. Figuring there was no way i was going to go, and ending up in there, Amazing!
Life is grand. |

PvD's solid bass line and strong kick make the sound system so storong~ I've been to vanguard few times since the renovation but, nothigh sounded like last night for sure,
it was definitely the PvD's typical bass and kick.
I want to see him in vanguard again soon~!!!
nobody rocks like PURE PvD!!! |

OMG! :eyes: :eyes: What a en night! I had a good feeling about it, and I wasn't disappointed at all! The sound system BY FAR the best in LA and that place if en HUGE!!! Way bigger than Avalon and way bigger than Spundae's main room. Like Robert said, I thought it was going to get sardine packed, but it wasn’t. There was plenty of room to move around and plenty of room to get up close. And with a huge patio, there was plenty of fresh air for everyone.
Anyhow, PVD...
HOLY ! He brought it down nice and hard. Well, almost, towards the end he dropped this drum and bass sounding song and everyone stopped. He let the song play, but I can see why he did it. His next song destroyed the place. He switched music styles and made the room go off till the end. From there on and until the closing DOUBLE ENCORE, the crowd was screaming and jumping nonstop. When he dropped DOGZILLA - WITHOUT YOU everyone went nuts. The night finally ended with a double encore of TIMES OF OUR LIVES (Some weird Remix, he played the normal one minutes earlier), and WOW - Mindcircus (Original Mix).
Paul ended his set at 4:15 and stayed till about 4:30 am, talked to his fans, signed autographs, took pictures, and talked to me about Ableton and his set up... Now if I could only remember or understood what he told me, would be ACE!
Vanguard
Oh man, I must say that all other venues should take note! Lines, WHAT LINES? How is it possible that there was NO LINE PROBLEMS WHAT SO EVER? It was very organized; the security was fast and friendly. Once inside, there were friendly security personnel everywhere! The sound system is THE BEST in LA IMO. Bartenders were fast and accurate, bathrooms where kept clean at all times, very professional.
What I really liked was that when Paul closed his set at 4:15 am, Security didn't rush like wild vultures to triy to kick everyone out. Instead, they let everyone stay until Paul said good bye to everyone. When Paul was finished with his set, he rushed to the bathroom, so I thought he was done. As I’m walking out, one of the security guards at the main door tells me... YOU'RE NOT STAYING TO GET HIS AUTOGRAPH? I told him HE LEFT. Then he said... NO, HE'S COMING BACK! HE JUST WENT TO THE BATHROOM. Oh ! So I went back and actually go to talk to PAUL about DJ STUFF!!
Over all experience... ACE!!!! Awesome spot. And to answer the one TA's question... YES, VANGUARD IS A BETTER PLACE THAN THE MAYAN FOR PVD. |

| yeah, there was so much space, even the washers didnt bother me last night, and PVD was really into it, lowering the music to listen to the crowd, asking the crowd for more,,,his set was pretty good, he ableton-ed A LOT of tracks, the changes were sometimes minor like putting the bass before the original track, putting different drums here and there, it was an amazing DJ performance, all of his tracks (the other side, TOOL, crush, for an angel) had edits, specially TOOL, im not sure if he did the edits right then and there or before the show,,also in a recent interview PVD mentioned something about his new track called "stormy skies" which he played by the way, it was with male lyrics, not sure who was singing but it was typical PVD tune, banging and kind of mellow, the only reason I figured it out was because of the lyrics saying "stormy skies,,,stormy skies" and its bassline...he also played the drill, play it louder, speed of sound (MVL remix), the 2 new kyau vs albert tunes: walk down and Kiksu, Playground, Without You, Vendetta, Real High, Marco V's Red blue purple, Sandra Flynn - Rockin, Spirits (Slusnik Luna Remix), 4 strings - hurricane, and a bunch of tracks I've never heard before |

Great night!! That sound system totally kicks butt!! For me the hightlight of the night was when Dogzilla came on! I WENT NUTS!! I also would have not exptected for him to throw this track in. His style is a little different.
Anyway, I had a great time, except when i got knocked down (almost all the way down to the floor!) by this stupid swaying couple who had no idea what the f@#8! they were doing. They were knocking people down like bowling pins. uuurrrggghhhhhhh go abuse your drugs somewhere else! It's people like this take up room for the real fans! |
