Laptop Buying Help...
View this Thread in Original format

I am looking into buying a laptop, but i've never really had one. I'm looking at this one right HERE .

I'm mainly looking to use it for recording mixes, editing sound, and maybe eventually running a sequencer/ableton possibly. I will most likely be using it to type up papers and storing digital music as well.

I'm not really a cpu/laptop guru, so for those who are... Would this laptop be sufficient for running these types of applications. I know a lot of you will say get a MAC, but if i was to get a MAC I would more than likely get one of the better models (which i surely dont have the money for). I am also open to other suggestions ..... please help! Thanks

Toshiba is your best choice for laptops.

That's highly debatable. I used to deal with Sony, Toshiba, Ibm, Compaq, Dell and many others and frankly most of them are just pure crap.

Ibm has a long standing track record of higher reliability but they usually don't have the cool factor of other manufacturers. Unfortunately the drive to bring costs down in the whole laptop industry means lower quality products from one of the best companies too.

I say look into reviews from anandtech and toms hardware for more detailled comparision.

For your recording needs I highly recommend you consider an external ( usb or firewire )or pcmcia ( Echo indigo is pretty much the standard ) sound card as in 99% of cases the sound cards on laptops are let's be honest crap with hiss issues due to integrated circuitry and such.

then dont bother posting u bellend.

to be fair the applications u are looking at then get a desktop and not a laptop. u could maybe spend an exuberant amount of money on a laptop which will cope with that type of application or u could spend a very resonable amount of money on a desktop equivalent.

Great advice.

You could always consider getting a real cheap laptop and a cheap pc too and you'll be able to have the best of both worlds. But really it all depends on your budget :p

i don't think that soundcard looks capable of handling 2 sound channels (one for mixing, other for cueing). dunno if you need that, but be careful with soundcard if sound is your priority.

i've just bought a laptop but went for RAM, graphics card and low price without looking at sound at all so can't give much experience in this matter. i ended up with a soundcard that seems really in amplifying, sounds very low even when hooking it to headphones, you might want to check that too

try to get one w/ new intel core duo for better performance. if you want to run all those apps,,, a pentium-m will not as powerful as the new core duo.

Yeah, i've seen some laptops w/ the new core duo, but its a little more expensive and may need to push to get it..... i'm sure in dealing w/ music editing and that, i will buy another soundcard (prob firewire).
But i'm just trying to get an idea of how others have been running comparable programs like soundforge, reason, or ableton (or all 3 - or similar) and how their laptop performs w/ it.

I've already gotten a desktop, but i'll prob be moving out of my condo soon and leave it w/ my brother. Thats kinda why i'm looking for a portable solution as opposed to bigger computer.

edit: budget at approx $1500 range
