Exactly. Apparently it was some mafia hit.

The already complicated case surrounding a murdered Canadian couple has taken another bizarre twist, with reports suggesting their deaths may have been a professional hit.

Domenico Ianiero, 59, and his 55-year-old wife Annunziata were found dead in their hotel room at the five-star Barcelo Maya Beach Resort in the Mayan Rivera on Monday, their throats slashed.

The couple was staying at the posh all-inclusive Mexican resort with family and friends ahead of what was supposed to have been their daughter Lily’s wedding. But the Woodbridge, Ont. parents wouldn’t live to see the nuptials, killed, police believe, sometime between midnight and 3am Monday.

Their bodies were discovered hours later after family members noticed their absence at breakfast. Relatives asked hotel staff to look in on them, and when they did they came upon the grisly scene. There was no sign of forced entry in the room, and nothing appears to have been stolen.

Mexican authorities confirmed that they were looking for two suspects, but wouldn’t say who they were. A published report now suggests the murders may have been the work of professionals – due in part to the cold, calculated way both were executed.

There’s a fair bit of mystery surrounding the identity of the killers, in part because of apparent mistakes made by resort staff.

Police believe they know which room the suspects stayed in – it’s located just down the hall from where the Ianieros were staying and apparently a trail of blood and footprints linked the two rooms. Blood stains were also found in the second room.

But questions remain as to who was staying there because of check-in complications. The only information listed on the front-desk register is two signatures with what police believe are false names.

Rumours circulated that two women may have been involved in the murders after staff apparently saw two women going into the suspect room – but even that has since been thrown into question.

What Mexican investigators say they do know is that the guests in the suspects' room were part of a vacation tour from Canada that arrived in the country on the 13th of February and was slated to leave this past Monday. It’s unclear whether the suspects were on the afternoon flight back to Toronto.

However a spokesman for the Mexican State Attorney General’s office figured they'd left the country.

"They are no longer in this state, nor, according to reports, in the country," Felipe Duran assured. “We don't know where (they went).

"The State Attorney is doing everything humanly possible to solve this isolated incident as quickly as possible," he promised, saying his office has been in contact with the Canadian Consulate.

Authorities in this country seem to feel this is a case for Mexican authorities and claim their hands are tied.

That doesn’t ease the grief of family members, who were faced with innumerable questions about why their relatives were targeted. The couple's son, Anthony, has reportedly flown to Mexico for the grim task of bringing his parents’ bodies home to Canada - it's expected he'll return Thursday.

A statement from Canadian officials on the case was expected Wednesday, but didn’t come. Foreign Affairs may comment Thursday.

Wanna hear something ed!

I stayed at the Barcelo Maya last month for my brother's wedding. My family and friends were actually staying in the same building that the murder was in. This place was like paradise and i was so shocked to hear that people had been murdered in the Mayan Riviera let alone the resort I vacationed in less than a month ago. Kinda weird that we were down there for a wedding too. But hey, don't let this taint your view. This resort was unreal, and I would go back in a heartbeat. Maybe we'll get a deal next time.

That's certainly creepy. What a coincidence!

Rumours are circulating that it was a mafia hit. The couple bought their house for about $500K cash about 10-15 years ago.... :conf:
