I have a cable modem attached to my main PC.
But I just got a new PC, put in a separate room, and I want it to share my main computer's Internet connection.
How do I do that? I already connected the new computer to the network by a cable. What do I do next? |

| I have my cable modem connected to a router with 4-port switch. The computers connect only to the router/switch, so each computer can access the internet independently. |

Really, so it's as simple as that? And where do I buy such a router?
Is there any software/Windows configuration that I need to do? |

I use a LinkSys BEFSR41 Router with 4-port Switch, which is a wired router. I have a Motorola SB5100-something Surfboard Cable Modem connected to the router's WAN port using CAT5 ethernet cable. My computers are connected to the router's LAN ports using the same type of cable. I do not need to install any software at all for the Router or the Modem.
If you currently have your modem connected directly to your Main PC, you would need to clone the MAC address into your router. The LinkSys Router settings can be accessed through Internet Explorer.
(I personally prefer the LinkSys User Interface over the D-Link one.)
I have only worked with wired networks. You might consider a wireless router if you don't want to run wires. |
