Thanks for all the replies guys!!!
One thing I must add is... I will have programs and stuff that doesn't support 64bit processing... Does this mean I have to avoid the AMD 64-bit processors?? Otherwise, If they run everything just the same, then by all means... I'll grab an AMD over Intel any day.
I need to be sure that the processor is compatible with digidesign Pro-Tools. And last time I checked, it won't cope with a dual-processor. SO the fastest AMD right now in solo-core would be??
so I've revised a bit...
-AMD processor (what's the fastest out now?)
-motherboard capable of 4 gb ram, PCI-Express 16X & some PCI slots.
-800Mhz FSB
-SATA -160 gb hd x2 ,7200RPM
-1 gb of ram, 400mhz, 2x 512mb DDR2
-dvdrom drive
-some USB2 & FW ports
-no floppy drive, no monitor, no keyboard, no mouse
-dual-monitor-capable video card
--with DX9, 256MB, PCI-E 16x
-integrated 10/100 network
-full-size tower case for easy access
-an extra fan to keep it all cooler
-a quiet, and reliable (built-like-a-tank) power supply.
I gather this can still stay under $1100?? |

Not a chance in hell. With all the quality fastest stuff you want, not even remotely close. You'd have to cut a lot of corners.
For instance:
AMD Athlon 64 FX-60 Dual-Core 2.6 GHz Socket 939 (1Mb L2 Cache On Each Core) Retail Box $1,349.00. Bye bye budget! |

1) If you have a 64 bit, you can still run 32 bit programs. You just won't get the 64 bit pluses.
2) FX-60.
3) Go for an Asus Board.
However the FX-60 is like a grand... Just go with the Opteron 165, it keeps up with the FX-55, and 60 so I hear. It's a solid CPU.
I'm pretty sure your program supports Dual Core processors, I don't see why it woudn't. |

| The Operton is a server CPU, why put it in a desktop? Costs more, don't they? |

Screw iNTEL! Screw AMD!
You need Babbage's difference engine! |

Please take not that you don't have to go AMD if you want a 64bit processor. I have an Intel P4 3.0 GHz HT 64bit processor, on a 775 socket. By no means am I saying go with intel over AMD, they both make amazing stuff, it's up to you in the end.
For me, I went Intel because I'm in 3D Animation, and Intels run 3ds Max slightly better. When I build a gaming box, for sure i'll go AMD. |

Now they have some Opterons for desktop/workstation/gaming users(145,160,165,175).
Why would you want an Opteron over an Athlon? Generally they are a bit cheaper or the same. The parts and the acutal CPU is made out of are higher quaility (supposdly, since they are server processors) and have a higher L2 cache then the Athlons and finally are stable and good overclockers apparantly. |
