from what i can see, the "weight gainer" is nothing more than extra strengh protien shake. it contains just a small bit more protein per serving than my ON, but it has more calories. thats about it.

Weight gainer usually contains a whack of useless carbs that in general will just make you fat and retain water.

With the North American carbo-rich diet - I'd be concerned taking any supplemental carbohydrates.

www.bodybuilding.com has great prices, especially for Optimum's Whey Protein, you can get 10 lbs jar for $56 US + $5 for shipping.

I will agree with you 100%. I have used them to get products not available at Canadian retailers many times.

$8 shipping to Canada (+ import taxes, duties and fees) and they are QUICK! Product is in the mail within 24 hours of order (usually same day!).

Mr. Smith
They do help a little bit. But overall I think supplements are just a really big marketing scam, especially in those fitness magazines. But before you pick up the powdered protein, go to the supermakret and buy a nice lean piece of chicken.

Nothing works better than 'REAL' food.

Chicken/Fish/Tofu/Greens/Grains

You can supplement all the you want. Unless you eat right, you ain't gaining .

But that being said. I only take a protein smoothy after a workout (mixed with a cup of fruit and yogurt).

The amino acid profile of a piece of chicken is vastly different than that of a good protein shake.

In the 80's Dr. A. Scott Connelly (a la Met-RX) did significant research on various amino-acid profiles and post-surgery/post-trauma healing. Certain protein combinations produced better post-trauma results than others.

Thus a protein shake that contains a full spectrum of amino acids provides superior muscle growth and exercise recovery (vs. a piece of chicken).

Further - various research shows that certain ratios of amino acid profiles achieve better results in various circumstances. That said - a good quality protein shake is pretty much always better from a macro-nutrient perspective than a piece of chicken breast.

yikes. I didn't think anybody used that anymore.

Fellow TA muscleheads, the "weightgainer" he's talking about is Cytogainer, it contains carbs, whey protein, creatine and glutamine, etc. You take only about 70 percent of the recommended servings I'd say, and balance it out with lots of water, tuna, chicken breasts, spinach, low fat milk and so on. I gained about 4 lbs of lean muscle in a month, training like a bitch three days a week, walking 40 mins a day and lots of dancing on the weekends too. Hard gainers simply have to eat/drink more. You can get it at Popeyes, Nutrition House, probably everywhere.

supplements are definitly not meal-replacers. they are supplements, if you cant eat 5 meals per day, eat 3 and have 2-3 shakes during the day. "liquid meals" are easy to swallow even after real food meals.
