When to use effects?

| My effects unit (Alesis AirFX) just came last night so naturally I was playing with it all last night. So now I'm thinking of how to incorporate the effects into my sets. When do you use effects, how often, and how much is too much, or is it all an on the spot judgement thing? Any cool tricks that you can do with effects? Thanks. |

Generally, it's an on-the-spot thing for me. Like, I'll be mixing and then I'll think, "Okay, an effect would go great in a second." Most people start-out over-using the effects because hey, we just discovered it and it's hella neat. However overtime you'll naturally tone-down your use and become more selective about where and how you use it.
If you just got it, don't worry about how often you use it. Just have fun. :) Unless, of course, you play out to a crowd tomorrow, in which case I'd avoid using it. :p |

I definitely overdid the effects when i started using my numark dxm06 mixer... I had the actual effect volume turned up way too high. I use the effects still, but i do it in such a way that it sounds like a part of the song. Sometimes i get so caught up in the mix that i dont even touch them at all... it all depends. When i teach people how to spin, they go right for the instant gratification of the effects mixer and miss the whole point of mixing!!
Just do you'r thing... You'll learn when and how to use the effects properly ~ you just gotta keep messin with them. For me, it just clicked after a couple months... |

| The music is (or it damn well should be) good enough without any random fx. So, never. |

As fills over transitions.
Effect over the last 4 beats before the bassline kicks in again.

By that logic, wouldn't any kind of mixing of tracks (Or any use of tracks other than listening to the them on their own) be disrespectful?
And would a mashup be like, sacriligious?
I guess my point is simply this: Perhaps badly used effects could be seen in this light, however I'd consider that more of an annoyance than disrespect. But well used effects can do amazing things to a dj set and to moderately boring or "filler" tracks... |

| Ya your right.. it just seems like lately every time i listen to a new trance demo i just keep hearing that same eeeeewwweeeewweeeww effect in the wrong places every thirty seconds :) |

Flanger.
And yeah, Trance DJ's are especially notorious for going overkill with it... So I definitely see where you're coming from. |

| When I'm messing around I like to use the flanger during the last 16, 8 or 4 beats right before the buildup explodes. Kinda adds a punch to the track. If used once or twice live, it could def. pump up the crowd even more. |

I don't see how that follows the same logic at all. |

Here's how...
Effects add something more to the tune... Doesn't matter what it is, but it's added and there's no changing that. During a transition, you're going to hear new percussion, maybe a new melody fading in on top of whatever tune you currently have playing. Therefore, you're adding something more to the already existing tune.
It makes sense, however I wouldn't compare it to effects. |
