If you walk a bit further, you see the entrance on your right.

While not precisely in Italy, you did guess the actual structure behind the wall. Good job. :)
It's an ossuary called the Sedlec ossuary (a chapel in Kutná Hora, Czech. Republic).

I've been to that bone church. It's in rome. it's run by some monks, but i forget what they're called. I think those bones are Christian martyrs but i forget as well.
damn, it's been close to 18 years now since i lived in Rome. But just hearing about the bone church flooded my memories again. |
