Why are torrents so slow?

Despite a humongous amount of seeds and my 8 mb line, it NEVER goes much above 50. Annoying.
What other way is there to download big, completely legal files? :( |

Well, the programs says the port I use is closed, but it works, so it isn't.

what about the number of seeders/leechers allowed? If you have too many allowed it could kill your download speeds.
Did you try alternative ports ( you might be blocked by your isp ) |

there's a good list to find a port to test
and I fully support Azureus. It grabs more memory as time goes on, but once you get the correct configuration, it's great |

Well, if I didn't have an open port before, I do now. And no difference. It isn't due to any limitations either, since I don't use any.
This damn piece of (utorrent) uses like 11 out of over 220 seeds. This is probably where the problem lies.
The upload speed is like 150 kpbs too... and the down speed a third of that. It makes me ING FRUSTRATED! |

The port IS open, or no traffic would happen. To be sure I set it to forward the port on my router, but that net service still says it's closed, so it's faulty.
I seriously wonder how torrents are so popular, being so slow. |
Hey just because you have a problem with your computer doesn't mean it's the same for everyone :p
I get 300~500k/sec downloads regurlaly and my upload usually runs at 100 k/sec ( I think that's the fastest it can go actually ) but like said previously you need to tweak your settings.
What software are you using? Look in the help file faq or whatever I'm sure your problem is covered ( I know the help with Azureus was real good ).
I see you edited your message:

It's unrealistic to expect to connect to a lot of seeders.
Also take into account if you are running on a public tracker there's chances that it's really slammed and download speeds suck ( I know I only get horrible speeds on public trackers ).
Look at this:
