Girl Weds Dog to Ward Off 'Evil Eye'
By Associated Press
February 22, 2006, 9:44 AM EST
NEW DELHI -- A 7-year-old girl wed a stray dog as part of a ritual to ward off the "evil eye" on her and her family in eastern India, a news agency reported Wednesday.
Shivam Munda's upper teeth appeared before her lower teeth -- considered a bad omen by members of the Santhal ethnic group to which she belongs, the Press Trust of India said in a report from Dhanbad, a coal mining town in the eastern state of Bihar.
Kundan Munda, a coal mine worker, said his daughter married the dog only to "remove the evil eye," a superstitious belief that some misfortune could befall her and the family, and that she would be free to marry a man later.
Friends and family participated in three days of traditional ceremonies and festivities that are part of a Santhal tribal marriage, Munda said, according to the report. |

There's no need to say anything about it, there are many many customs or traditions out there that we North Americans might find strange. Instead of finding it weird, why not be fascinated?
Here's another..

Inazawa's Naked Festival (Hadaka Matsuri)
When:Feb 2007 (annual)Where:Kounomiya Shrine, Inazawa City, Japan
Bare-bottomed men aged 23-43 ensure their good luck for the coming year by crowding the streets of Inazawa City in the hope of touching a naked man! Since 767BC the Naked Man, aka Shin-otokoa, has walked this seasoned route through thousands of sweaty, desperate men to reach the Kounomiya Shrine.
Shinto is the folk religion of Japan, responsible for many of its most colourful festivals, and its traditions have endured despite the "westernisation" of the country in the last century. Shinto tradition in this case believes the Naked Man absorbs all bad luck and evil deeds from the men who touch him - no-one is sure, but the ritual may commemorate the end of a plague, as the Naked Man takes on the ills of the community and is then expelled from it.
It is a great honour to be chosen as the Naked Man. It needs to be - first he must undergo elaborate purification rites by shaving off all the hair on his body. He then sets off through the streets, besieged by up to 9000 men, all desperate to touch him. He is pummelled, chased, pulled over; he faints, is bruised and must spend an entire day in the thick of a heaving mass of loinclothed bodies while completely naked. When he finally arrives at his destination, the crowd jostle to grab any available part of his body for an hour or more before he can pay his respects to the Shinto deity of the shrine. Once he is dressed he is then shooed out of town to rid the town of all evil.
Only the men dressed in loincloths (fundoshi) and sandals (tabi) are allowed to touch the Naked Man and special bodyguards line the route to splash freezing water over them as the Naked Man draws near. This has the dual purpose of restraining the wild impulses of the loinclothed ones while creating an aura of mystery around the steaming man. Bear in mind that it's mid-winter here in Inazawa City, so don't even try to keep up with the locals! You won't be alone if you've come to gawp though - 300,000 observers generally turn up - for a spectacle you won't forget in a hurry!

Woman marries dolphin
Sharon Tendler met Cindy 15 years ago. She said it was love at first sight. This week she finally took the plunge and proposed. The lucky "guy" plunged right back.
In a modest ceremony at Dolphin Reef in the southern Israeli port of Eilat, Tendler, a 41-year-old British citizen, apparently became the world's first person to "marry" a dolphin.
Dressed in a white dress, a veil and pink flowers in her hair, Tendler got down on one knee on the dock and gave Cindy a kiss. And a piece of herring.
"It's not a perverted thing. I do love this dolphin. He's the love of my life," she said Saturday, upon her return to London.
Tendler, who said she imports clothes and promotes rock bands in England, has visited Israel several times a year since first meeting the dolphin.
When asked in the past if she had a boyfriend, she would always reply, "No. I'm going to end up with Cindy." On Wednesday, she made it official, sort of. While she acknowledged the "wedding" had no legal bearing she did say it reflected her deep feelings toward the bottlenosed, 35-year-old object of her affection.
"It's not a bad thing. It just something that we did because I love him, but not in the way that you love a man. It's just a pure love that I have for this animal," she said.
While she still kept open the option of "marrying human" at some stage, she said for now she was strictly a "one-dolphin woman".
She's hardly the jealous type, though.
"He will still play with all the other girls there," she said, of their prenuptial agreement. "I hope he has a lot of baby dolphins with the other dolphins. The more dolphins the better." |
