Phones in the US come locked too.
Hey Jay- why don't u petition them for the right to text message internationally (overseas)? We can receive international text messages, but can't send them. I was told it was cuz they couldnt decide what to charge. Europeans have much more freedom when it comes to the cell phones. |
what do u mean? i constantly send text messages back and forth between my people in polska |

Add that we also cant port our numbers to a different carrier, like they can everywhere else.:sadgreen:
Canada has one of the least developed wireless service in the world, as far as service plans, features, and support.
Take Sprint PCS in the states for example (I used to work for them). Their standard plan includes:
-$29.99/month fee
-200 daytime minutes
-unlimited evening and weekends starting at 9pm
-ALL long distance within the states is included
-Caller ID
-Call Waiting
-Voice Mail
-Call forwarding
-if you go over your 200 minutes sprint automatically adds 100 extra minutes for $5, up to 700 minutes. After that it's $0.10 per minute.
Now find me a canadian plan that comes even close to that.... *edit* that's not an employee, or corporate deal. I'm talking normal plan that is available to everybody. |
my plan:
-$45/month
-200 daytime minutes
-unlimited evenings and weekends starting at 7pm
-caller id, voice mail, call waiting, call forwarding, conference calling (not that i use that)
-100 free text messages
thats pretty close. of course thats a 6-year old plan from fido, when fido wasn't owned by the devil |

| Remember that the operating conditions for these carriers is very different in comparison to the States and Europe. Population density is going to play a huge role in what type of service you get, and how much you pay for it. |

Nat, international SMS works fine, both with Rogers and Fido. Check your service center number under SMS settings. |

I bought my phone at full price. And its not "just one of those things i have to live with."
Thats such a canadian mentality. |
Jay, you should have known better than to buy a phone at full price from a cell phone provider outlet. Sorry to say, but that was not a very smart decision. I am pretty sure that you have a 7 or 14 day money back guarantee. Give the phone back and buy an ulocked phone (which is cheaper than the full price from a provider). Problem solved.
I should have added to my comment above "It is just one of those things we have to live with, but lucklily we do have other (less expensive) options". Buyer beware. |

The US has 10 times more the population of Canada. There is a much stonger buying power there, plus competition plays a huge role in price plans. |

Jay,
If you end up returning the phone and want another one, they sell unlocked phones at a small store on Yonge & Bernard ..south of you. Not bad pricing but not a "huge" selection of phones though .. |

| Like others have already suggested, do a search on howardforums or even google for your phone model. Some phones can easily be unlocked just by punching in a sequence of numbers on your keypad. |

If it's a nokia it's really easy to get it unlocked remotely by a number generator. There are several sites where people will get you the unlock codes if you simply ask nicely. Just look around. Afterdawn is one such site.
Oh and don't go on howardforums asking for someone to help you unlock your phone as that'll get your a$$ banned. You'd have to checkout the marketplace and pay.
Which phone is it and how much did you pay? |

I'm gonna go with option #2.
If you have an unlocked phone and send it in with Rogers to repair, they tell you they are gonna lock your phone while its out for repair. So I doubt they'd do it... |
