in the spirit of the unexpected remixes thread...how about tracks with clever, obscure, etc. samples...doesn't have to be current or EDM.
I just heard this track the other day for the first time in forever and it brought me back to my high school days, lol:
Dream Warriors - My Definition of a Boombastic Jazz Style
(talented locals...I think this track is from 1988? pre-Austin Powers use of a sample from the theme song to the local '70s game show Definition)

Lemme tell you a little history of that. When I DJd in the late 80s, sampling was all the rage... you used to hear it everywhere! Kon Kan, Pet Shop Boys, Sigue Sigue Sputnik, etc. I also hooked up my Casio keyboard with sampling, and I used to throw in my own stuff. It was a totally new kind of music that started with new technology, digital music, of faster microchips, that can create new sounds never heard before or blends that would be impossible without digital technology. Those were great years...
Until..........the lawsuits started.
Digital sampling didn't cross any copyright laws, since it never existed before. The RIAA (or its former equivalent, always a pain in the a**) then banned samples without providing royalties to the original artists or source. So any new music that came out with the slightest sample, had to have the original artists' permission. From that point sampling was almost killed, with a few exceptions.
From record stores, I got theatrical sound effects albums which were very successful. Nowadays, they're all easily googlable wav/mp3 files so access to them is much faster and easier than ever. |
