Ambience: Take a little bit of Montreal’s chilled out dance vibe, toss a bit of simple European club decor into the mix, add a devoted Toronto music crowd and you have Footwork in a nutshell. With an quasi-underground setting — you have to make a trip down a back alley off of Brant Street to get in — and solid DJ line-ups, Footwork has earned a reputation as one of the city’s most popular venues for fans of electronic music. And yes, there is ample space to dance, a bit of lounging space even, but few people come here to sit around and relax.
Crowd: These are the hardcore party people who know what they want in a club — great beats and room to move. The rest they usually bring along themselves. Expect the clientele to range in age, but most are in their mid to late-20s.
Dress Code: Wear something comfortable, and preferably revealing, assuming you have stupendous cleavage or bulging biceps that you want to show off. Beyond that almost anything goes.
Should I dance on the bar?: Only if you’re wearing go-go boots. If you are, then get right up there.
Will I get lucky?: Probably not. Most people are here to party and tend to be into the sights and sounds more than each other. They’re not unfriendly, but they probably won’t want to be pawed, either.
Best accessory: Anything that can keep you moving for six hours or more (see below).
Cocktail du jour: That’ll be Red Bull, please. Beer and mixed drinks also sell well, but most people need a bit of a kick to keep them dancing long into the night.
Hours: Friday and Saturday 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.
