The only thing that made B&J bearable was the people I was with (Christen and Heather thanks for a great time ). I was behind the DJ booth most of the night, and I'm not exagerrating when I say that they were getting in a jesus pose every 2 minutes on average and a "twinkly fingers" every 3 minuts. I think I officially gave up any hope when I heard "Nightfly" played towards the end of the night.
Oh yeah, the mixing sucked bad. I suck at mixing and even I could easily notice the crappy beatmatching which they attempted to mask by pushing the volume levels way into the red and dropping off the bass (I only know this because I occassionally have done this with varying degrees of success). They used a combination of Traktor and CDJ's (and I think they might have actually used a vinyl turntable once or twice.) |

I thought their July show was awesome. I had high expectations for this one. As soon as they dropped their first track, this opera-like track, I knew it was a different story. In July, they started playing at 140 bpm right out of the gate and never let up the energy. Here, they started at 135 and were melody focused at the beginning. Was ok, but they dropped WOW - Killa (orkidea rmx) way too early. The nice thing for the first 2 hours was that they didn't play a lot of their own productions, unlike in July. Once they got into the 138-140 range, the show was decent for an hour. Played several of my personal favorites, but the last hour was dreadful. They played a lot of their own productions coupled with an assortment of grating tech. trance songs, and choose their own cheesiest productions at that. What happened to the Monument album? DFF is horrible. The Nightfly had great remixes by Transa and Rapid Eye, but the original is cheesy as hell. They then capped it off with Desire as the encore track. Yuris and I were behind the DJ booth literally yelling at them to turn it off. Overall, I was extremely dissapointed.
Have to agree with Yuris, the mixing wasn't very good, but B&J are known for that. In fact, most of the time, Jaspar was cueing for Piet because Piet has the reputation as the better mixer, but last July, they just switched off every track. What also sucked was that I gave them a CD as a request (was a song they've played at previous venues that I love), but they wouldn't play it because, "it isn't on my computer." Apparently, without Final Scratch, they are in deep . All that aside, on a personal note, B&J are cool people. They hung out with fans after the show like they did in July and were easy to talk to.
I had a great time, but it was because of the people, not the music. I saw everyone I wanted to see this weekend. Particluarly on Saturday:
Jimmy K
Yuris
Christen
Beto
Mitchell & Tatiana
Igor (hope that's how you spell it)
Martyna
The energetic Polish B&J fans
Dan
Eric
Many others whose names it was too damned loud to hear, most of who I don't know if they even read this board. |

| I dont get it. Theyre "known for their bad mixing." Soooo... whats the point of going to live BJ show? Why dont you download a better set with all the same songs, or even more logical, save your money for a DJ that knows how to mix. Im not trying to take a shot at the genre, I just dont get the fascination with obvious bad DJs... |

For me, the point of going to this show was not only to see them, it was because I knew certain friends I wanted to see were going to be there as I don't live in Chicago and I usually go out once a month, so I choose what show I go to based, in part, on who else is going.
As for the "fascination," I like the trance genre and am not ashamed to admit it. As such, I can ID many of the tracks anyway without being intimately familiar with a DJ's personal playlist. As a person who enjoys mixing, I always enjoy watching DJs of various genres use different mixing techniques, especially with the proliferation of software for mixing. The observations I made in the previous post regarding their mixing were just what I noticed them doing.
I missed the 1st show B&J did in Chicago because I'd heard so many negative things about them (which is a mistake on my part for prejudging), but when they returned last July, the people who went told me they were great and I should go, so I decided to see what the hype was about, and they put on a great show.
Some hardcore Blank & Jones fans would go because they support them as producers. Others just went because they play trance, and in reality, Chicago doesn't bring a diverse group of trance djs on a yearly basis.
As I noted in my first post, they chose to play, what I consider, some of the worst representations of their productions. Had they chosen others, I would've enjoyed the show much more. Just a personal preference. Many people I talked to really enjoyed the show.
Lastly, I loved their July show, as the energy they created made up for relatively weak technical skills, at least in my opinion, so I went to this show hoping they could create that same vibe (but unfortunately, they didn't). Maybe they had a more off night than usual. Can't say as I haven't seen them live often enough to know. |

Ang: Because for a lot of people who are not really into the scene or dont care about watching the dj beatmatch. They want to go out and party and hear some trance music.
Which is what blank and jones are known for.
See some people like yourself love james z but i would rather be sleeping as his sound gets boring about 10 minutes in for me. Point blank Some people are really into the whole technical aspect and some people dont give a .
I have always loved most of their productions... somewhat cheesy but it is a blast to party to. And in the end thats all that matters . |
