Issue with my needle

Of course I just got a couple new records in and ran them to the turntables. Of course once it reached a certain point on the record the needle kept getting knocked back. I brought it to the other turntable and nothing happened. It only does it on a specific spot on the record and does the same on another record. I watched the needle closely and it seems like it gets pulled a little before getting knocked back. Almost like the needle itself is a little loose or something. Also, I am wondering why it is only happening in a specific spot on the record.

i had the same exact problem, mostly fixed now though. make sure the lever underneath your tonearm isn't touching it a bit (you know, the little rubber lift arm) and also make sure the screw on top of the tonearm assembly isn't too tight

should do the trick :)

Okay, get this...

First of all, I have the same settings on both turntables. It skips on the one and not the other. So I removie the stylus on both arms and switch them. I play the record on the the table that it was working on and it still works no matter the stylus I use. I put it on the table it wasn't working on and it still doesn't work. Then for some odd reason I figured I would see what the hell the weight on the very back of the tone arm is for. You know, the thing that spins loosely left or right but never actually tightens. Well I saw a groove there and realised you can move it back and forth slightly. I moved it closer towards the tonearm and it fixed the problem. GREAT! But...

Why did this only happen in a specific spot on the record? And why only on a couple records that I know of? Is it specific grooves in the record that are causing this to happen and those types of grooves can only be found on certain records because of the sounds each one produces? What the hell happens if I am out at a club or something somewhere playing and this happens? Just seems a little odd. I wanna blame the record still but it doesn't happen on the other table!!! I also move the thing up and down on the other table and the record still plays through. I don't get it...

Did you set up your weights correctly?

Do you know how to set up weights?

if not search the forums or check out djforums.com and go to tutorial section there is a good tutorial how to set up the weight.

If your weight isnt setup correctly its not good. For example if the weight is too little then the styles will burn itself and the record MUCh more. Its important to get the weights set correctly.

the weight on the back of the tonearm is to balance so the styles wont bee to hard on the record. Think of it as a lever system

Allways try get the tonearm as parallel to the platter as possible.
Just try lowering the tonearm high.
Iv found that my tonearms on each TT using the same carts/styluses need different settings to work equaly as good.
I just set my tonarms to as low as they can go without having the cart touching the record.

maybe try cleaning the needles, then maybe check to see if the needle is correctly in the cartridge... just a thought...

evry once in while i get a record that kicks the needle out of the groove at a certain spot. Play the needle over this spot a few times and it usually gos away.

Heh, I think this might have happened last night because it stopped doing it altogether. I know a few of my records may need cleaning, but this was a brand new record. Now I have another dilemme but I know its the records fault.

It isn't scratched but just looks like the way it was pressed it is causing the needle to move off course. The plastic just has these slight ripples moving towards the center of the record causing it to skip. I'm just not having such good luck at the moment. :(

I had this exact same problem. It would play fine sometimes, but like you say it just seemed to disagree with some records that were fine on the other deck. I had to be extremeley light handed with the slip cueing, and sometimes it was just impossible - just moving the record really slowly would skip it out of the groove. Swapping the carts, adjusting the anti-skate/weight made no difference, so it had to be a deck problem.

There was also a slight difference in the angle of the tonearms - the headshell of hte bad deck was a good half an inch or so further away from the platter (I still have pics of this and i can post them if you like). After months of trying to work out what I could do to fix them, I took the pictures along to a repair shop, who immediately saw the problem and replaced the tonearm. Now working perfectly!

:)
